Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2008 Subaru Impreza.

A forum member at NASIOC has posted a corporate communiqué supposedly sent to North American Subaru dealers announcing the forthcoming arrival of the 2009 Impreza WRX. Two models are outlined in the release, the first, a new model dubbed the Impreza GT, will only be available with an automatic transmission and the 224 hp engine from the WRX. But that's not the real news...

The 2009 WRX's turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer will get a boost in output to 265 hp (41 hp more than the 2008 model) and will only be available with a manual gearbox. The '09 WRX will also feature an upgraded suspension (no details), an STI-style front grille, standard aero kit and a new grey wheel package, along with red stitching on the steering wheel and seats.

The memo also mentions the inclusion of a moonroof on models equipped with the premium package, along with some undisclosed changes on vehicles equipped with the ivory interior.

While owners of the 2008 WRX might feel slighted, it's nice to know that Subaru is stepping up its game on the eve of the release of the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.

Top tip Matt!

Did you see the aux inputs in the gallery? They show an ipod plugged into an RCA jack with a stereo mini plug. Also it looks like the AUX RCA jacks will accept L/R audio and Video as well.

Thats nothing new. They've had an Ipod dedicated adapter for a little while now that works across most of the Subaru lineup.

You're right - that's pretty ridiculous. "Eh, noone will notice" mentality...

What I really wanted to point out was that they are using the wrong type connector (stereo mini plug into one of the rca component jacks) to show auxiliary connectivity.

Also I didn't know that video in was offered before.

I guess they got the message that the new WRX was kinda meh...
I guess to compensate for its incredibly pedestrian and blah looks, they have added horsepower. Too bad for the first year buyers. I'd be very annoyed.

Odd response to the WRX's lukewarm reception.

It doesn't need more power, it needs steering feel and a suspension not made of overcooked pasta.

New Impreza does anything but Impressa.
If this is legitimate and they are going to upgrade the suspension and give it the same look as the STi I could live with it.
hmm...so subaru feels unaffected by rising gas prices? unless they can squeeze the same economy out of more hp...subaru is mostly a niche company anyways, though...i should know...i drive a forester!

THe WRX finally has the balls to take on the MAzdaspeed 3! This should be fun to watch! Inside Lines Comparo was with an 08, and it got blasted by both the Ralliart and the MS3. Now its rematch, and now some things are going to start happening!!!

dude i hope they're mating that new engine to a new 6 spd and not the 5.

Sorry wrong reply, that belonged lower.
        Both of them.

Just kidding. I've actually seen several new WRXs and STIs in my area.
Should have redesigned it as well.

I'm still not feeling the regular WRX models. STI model of this generation is the only one I can stomach.

Still a pig on the looks end. bet it still plows in a corner as well

I hate to break it to you, but those pics up there are of the '08 WRX sedan.

Subaru hasn't released pictures of the new 09 WRX, let alone officially acknowledge it.

Why are all of you knuckles draggers making fun of this car? Have you seen yourself in the mirror lately?
No it will depend on how good the Subayota will be. I'll be taking one or them for sure.
This is my next car. This or the STI. I could afford both; the only reason I would pick the WRX is gas mileage.
Boy am I glad I didn't buy a WRX a few weeks ago. I was pretty close to getting one since I was faced with $1800 of work on my 2001 RS.
        +1 to Keep the RS.

        Keep the RS.

I would, but it was abused by the previous owner, has had poor luck with factory defects, and has tried to fall apart numerous times in my ownership. I ultimately stuck with it when I left my apartment one day and it was sitting under some orange parking lot lights and it just looked really awesome, but that will only work so many times. It will definitely be a sad day when it goes away, but assuredly, it will happen.
