Production Camaro details coming on July 22nd

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Chevy Camaro concept.
We're admittedly tiring of the Camaro hype machine, but we can't fault the fanboys at 5thgen.org for keeping their pot of excitement on boil. The site threw up a countdown to the announcement of the production Camaro on July 22nd, which apparently will be held at all domestic Chevrolet dealers through a two-hour satellite broadcast. Retailers will be given all the details on the Camaro at that time and according to a source, "real orders for real cars" will begin being accepted.

Is that announcement coming on July 22, 2009 or 2010?

January 2009. 5 more months. 150 days. 216,000 minutes. 12960000 Seconds. Not that long if you think about it.

I mean 'January 09 for production to start'.....
Dude, the countdown says July 2008 for the announcement. Are you really that lazy to read?

Just build the 500+hp LSA Camaro Z-28 and I will be in line with cash in hand.

Good car. Bad timing. Make a boosted 4 cylinder version please. :)

Four cylinder turbo won't be any more fuel efficient than a V-6.
I'll take the V-6 please. Dual-mode hybrid V-8 wouldn't hurt too much though, if the price was right.

I'll take mine in the regular bloodthirsty V8 configuration, please.

I'll take mine with foot pedals, please.

Umm...i'm guessing you're not really all that familiar w/ the tuning that you can do w/ a turbo motor compared to a NA v6. That plus the much lighter weight would without a doubt in my mind allow it to get more than 35 mpg highway if done correctly.

As you tune the motor for more power, you will get a subsequent decrease in efficiency. Yes it's true that turbo motors "can" deliver better economy, but only if you stay out of the turbo, but what fun is that? Plus, the weight difference may not be all that much. The turbo 4cyl also comes with the associated plumbing, intercooler, and turbo which will add weight. The v-6 would have none of that. I'd guess they are not terribly far apart weight-wise. Even the V-8 wouldn't be much more, the SBC is well-known to be compact and lightweight for its displacement.
35mpg gallon in a car as heavy as the Camaro with a turbo 2.0L engine is asking an awful lot. If it were optimized for better economy, like the Cobalt XFE, with low rolling resistance tires, aerodynamic aids, and a reprogrammed ECU to promote fuel economy, maybe, maybe it could get into the low to mid 30 mpg range. Even the optimized Cobalt XFE is just squeezing past that at 36mpg and that's in a much lighter car with a non-turbo engine.
But doing all that will defeat the purpose of the Camaro int he first place. It's not meant to be a fuel economy champ. Those that buy one aren't going to care that it gets mid to upper 20's on the highway, especially since the V-8 version offer about the same. In fact, most would probably be quite happy achieving that. There are other, more fuel efficient options for those that want a fuel efficient car first, the Camaro is for those that value performance primarily.

Agree with the first post....it's been hyped so much it's boring.
Sure Camaro fanboys are all over it, but it's almost old news already..what is taking so long to bring a car to production that is based on an existing platform?

Well put. Can we call fanboys of the Camaro "hick-boys"
I love muscle cars, but Bob "boy-who-cried-production-car" Lutz is the master of beating news on a car over our head until Mustangs start to look attractive.
PS- I doubt this new 'maro will stack up against the Challenger.

Is this the announcement for the mid life cycle refresh?

If you want a four cylinder car buy a car engineered for it, like the turbo Solstice or Sky, the Cobalt SS, HHR SS or get a used SRT4. Those of us who vastly prefer V8s have been waiting a long time for this car.
