Porsche is known to have some of the best engineers in the business, constantly churning out new technologies for their vehicles. But, as we've often said – irking Porschephile commenters in the process – their designers always seem to be focusing on something else, which could go a long way towards explaining why every successive 911 iteration looks largely the same as the one it replaces. So, what is Porsche Design so busy with? Why, apparel, of course! Now we know that Porsche Design is not the same group of designers responsible for the cars, but it sure gets you thinking when the merchandising division comes up with new designs faster than the car folks.
Case in point: the latest Adidas collection from Porsche Design, marking four years of collaboration with Adidas. With the fashion industry already gearing up for the Fall/Winter seasons, Adidas and Porsche have come out with their latest cold-weather gear. Among the items in the new collection are the Primaloft stuffed vest, messenger bag, Tennis shoes, driving shoes and jump rope shown above – perfect for the dash from your Cayenne into the gym. Press release after the jump.
Collaboration with adidas enters its fourth season
The Porsche Design Fall/Winter 2008 Sports Collection
Herzogenaurach/Stuttgart. Porsche Design and adidas are presenting their new
sports collection for the 2008 fall/winter season. Following on from the highly
successful start in January 2007, this is the fourth joint collection that the two
companies will have presented. Once again, the collection features driving, golf,
running and tennis.
Functionality, top quality technology and striking design are the things that set
sports shoes, textiles, accessories and sports equipment apart. Technologies such
as the cushioning element adiPrene® and technologies such as Primaloft® provide
top level warmth, breathability and protection. The ForMotion™ technology
developed by adidas, with its maneuverable cushioning element, ensures that the
running shoes allow the foot to roll gently and evenly.
The highly functional "Supercup High" shoe was developed especially for
professional racing car drivers. This premium-quality driver's shoe is available in
two versions, allowing it to be used both as a leisure shoe and in the professional
motor sports arena. With its softly curved shock-absorbing rounded heel, the
"Supercup Professional" is the ideal shoe for professional racing car drivers. The
reinforced heel, ankle protector with Velcro® fastener and cushioning around the
ankle and top of the foot area provide excellent support and comfort. The fireresistant
and oil-resistant sole together with the fire-proofed Nomex® lining mean
that the shoe also meets the high safety standards demanded in motor sport. It has
been subjected to testing by the International Motor Sport Federation (FIA) and
received approval for use in motor racing. This premium quality driver's shoe was
introduced for the first time to Porsche Supercup drivers when they took delivery of
their vehicles in March 2008 and will be available to them for racing purposes as
from July 2008.
The second version of the shoe was designed specifically for Porsche Design
customers. The outline and sole of the "Supercup High (Limited Edition)" shoe are
modeled on the legendary driver's shoe from the Porsche Design Sports Collection,
launched in spring/summer 2007, while the upper is a more elegant version of the
pro shoe. The shoe will be introduced to the global market with a limited edition of
550 pairs. Each pair of shoes will have a unique identification number etched onto
it using laser technology.
Another prestigious item from the apparel selection is the "racing blouson" - also a
limited edition item with only 550 examples throughout the world. This is a modern
version of a classic motor racing top. The wind and water repellent "down jacket"
guarantees maximum warmth, thanks to its top quality down lining, and has a
shiny-metallic outer material which gives it a particularly functional appearance.
In this, the fourth season of the Porsche Design Sports Collection, the range of
colors has been extended. In addition to the classical black and white, the
collection now also includes lava (orange), dark maroon and green grey. The
collection will go on sale in July 2008 and will be available throughout the world in
exclusive individual stores, in adidas Sport Performance Concept Stores and
Porsche Design Stores.
