If you're on Ferrari's mailing list for the new California, you might have seen a new email in your inbox today with a link to another chapter (literally) opening up on the vehicle's dedicated website. Today's installment leads to a video of the California's trick folding hard-top – another first for Ferrari (if you don't count the innovative one-piece mechanism designed by Fioravanti for the limited-production 575-based Superamerica). Thanks to a mechanism that moves multiple segments in unison, the hard-top can be deployed or retracted in only 15 seconds – faster than the soft-top on any convertible ever to roar out of the gates at Maranello.

Follow the jump to watch the video.

Up and down faster than most can just go up. Sweet
        • 6 Years Ago
Pfft. Miata PRHT goes up or down in 12 seconds.

the california has only one problem imo - that extreme line on the side that runs into the butt. if they would have toned it down a bit, for instance have the line run to where the upper line above the vent runs, i think it would be an extremely pretty car. the prettiest ferrari in a long time even.

tho it would probably be more boring that way.

It seems that its folding motion is not so quick as the Merc SLK's
        • 6 Years Ago
        SLK = 22 seconds
        Ferrari California = 15 seconds

Great-lookin' car. For about $75k it would be a perfect entry-level Ferrari.

This car is a nightmare. Nose on, it's slightly evocative of a 250/275, but leave that perspective and the rest of it is a mess. The rear end looks like the rear end of the ill fated last generation Mercury Cougar. The tailpipes are total gimmick, and the body colored fender vents are just so "Fast and Furious". If the Scagletti and 599 didn't already exist, I'd have to say that this is the worst Ferrari design to date. It's amazing that it was penned by the same people that put together the clean styles of the F430 Scuderia and Enzo. I think this car is F(car)ugly.

Bears a resemblance to the BMW Z1, actually...

You know, I really want to like this car, but its going to be heavy as sin. The Gran Turismo is 4100 lbs! The roof of California has to weigh an extra 100-200 lbs. That's some serious chub!
Any chance this thing is going to be priced aroun $40k?

      Wishful thinking...

Is there a real video? computer simulation doesn't cut it. Everything's too smooth to be realistic.

I do like the way they engineered it.

      ugliest. ferrari. ever.

        +1

Those who call a Ferrari ugly are those who will NEVER own a Ferrari. Have fun with your Civics, Sentras and Tiburons.

The fact is this: Ferrari will sell EVERY ONE that they make and owners will actually enjoy DRIVING their Ferrari even more than those who bitch and moan about the way they look.

I'm sure your wife and girlfriend aren't all that, but I'm not complaining about them on a forum without even getting to know them. :-/

Everyones opinion on how nice or how ugly this car looks does not matter, because the fact is that, manufacturers like Ferarri, Lambo, Bently etc, can build a car out of a cardboard box, add wheels to it and slap their logo on it and people will still buy it just because of the name.
No such thing as an ugly Ferrari.
Wow, if you had told me it was a Hyundai I'd believe it. So ugly, it hurts.
Really! Ugliest EVER? wow, have you ever seen the Mondial, or a Testarossa, how about 308 GTS. All pale in comparison to this car... I know it's subjective, but come on man, that's a bit of a stretch.

Yes, there is no such thing as an ugly Ferrari - just ugly Americans.
The 308 GTS is beautiful, so is the Testarossa. Neither is the 348, but what can you do?

This is ugly. It's not the ugliest Ferrari by far, it's probably not even the ugliest current Ferrari.

Compared to the hideous F40, this thing is a wet dream.
I like the F40 and the F50, despite them being completely different styles. Both do succumb to "styling by windtunnel" a bit, but not enough to distract from the beautiful lines. And not enough to make them ugly slaves to aerodynamics like the Enzo.
Hideous? The F40? Are you mad?

Whilst it was designed with aerodynamics in mind its still a beautiful car in an angular 1987 sort of way. Ive yet to see anything on the road that has more presence
      • 6 Years Ago
whoever said the F40 was hideous obviously doesn't know anything about cars.
