2009 Focus RS info emerges after internet leaks

In the magical lands where the Focus looks cool, otherwise known as Europe, new images of the hotrod 2009 Focus RS have had enthusiasts atwitter the last few days. While the images are clearly 'chops - the wheels and backgrounds look like they're in high speed motion, while the tire tread is statue-still - they're reportedly legitimate mockups that were used to illustrate internally how the car might look. Ford confirmed their legitimacy today when it released two more photos of an actual Focus RS prototype along with a press release. The two new pics show the RS prototype racing around the Nurburgring where it's being tested ahead of its launch in 2009. The press release confirms that the RS will be powered by a Duratic 2.5L engine that's turbocharged to produce 280 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Ford also claims it's got torque steer for this pocket rocket in check with a new front-wheel-drive system and limited-slip differential. As for the design, we'll get to see it for the first time at the 2009 London Motor Show in late July. Check out both the photoshopped pics and Ford's two official pics in our gallery below and read the official press release for yourself after the jump. Gallery: 2009 Ford Focus RS

PRESS RELEASE
NEW FORD FOCUS RS ON TRACK AS FIRST DETAILS CONFIRMED
Cologne, June 12, 2008 – Ford RS is back and the all-new Focus RS is on track! An early prototype of the fastest Focus road car to date is now undergoing performance and durability testing at the challenging Nürburgring Circuit in Germany, in preparation for its launch in 2009.
The principal architect of the Focus RS project is Ford of Europe's Vehicle Line Director for Performance Vehicles, Jost Capito, whose Team RS development group were responsible for the first generation Focus RS in 2002, and more recently, the Fiesta ST and the new Focus ST.
Capito said: "The new Focus RS is as much a car for driving enthusiasts as the one before it and classic Ford RS models of the past. We're staying true to the core RS principles of a no-compromise, affordable high performance road car you can live with. The new Focus RS will have the muscles, heart and soul of a genuine RS and will be exciting to drive every day."
The all-new Focus RS features a specially developed, turbocharged version of the Duratec 2.5-litre engine, based on Focus ST, but significantly revised to generate over 280PS and more than 400 Nm of torque, thus achieving an excellent power-to-weight ratio.
Various chassis innovations, developed in conjunction with Ford's Advanced Engineering Centre in Aachen are being tuned for the new car by the Cologne-based Ford Team RS. Their overriding objective is to achieve optimized driving dynamics and on road performance through an advanced technology front-wheel drive system, combined with a limited-slip differential.
"In early prototypes based on Focus ST vehicles, the new system is more than meeting our targets for exceptional levels of traction, handling and steering," Capito added. "Given that the enthusiastic team behind the car are all performance vehicle enthusiasts, you can imagine that our standards are high."
Ford Focus – A great starting point
The standard Ford Focus is an excellent base for a high performance car – agile, responsive and stable.
While the latest Focus ST has already proved this to be the case, the new RS will take these qualities to the next level, benefitting from extensive engineering knowledge gained through the Company's highly successful Motorsport programmes, notably with the Focus World Rally Car.
"We have no doubt that we can enhance the acclaimed qualities of the already excellent Focus for an even higher performance model than the ST," Capito added. "Now, we are going through the rigorous job of proving out our technical approach in extensive testing and tuning over a variety of roads including the most demanding track in the world, the "Green Hell" that is the Nürburgring Nordschleife!"
"With two consecutive Manufacturers' World Rally Championship titles and the success of Fiesta and Focus ST models, we have the knowledge and the experience. The time is right for Ford to deliver a new high performance model for the legions of loyal Ford RS customers around Europe," Capito concluded.
The new Focus RS test and development programme is now well underway and will continue for several months, prior to the vehicle being readied for production in early 2009.
Although the internet and car magazines around the globe have continued to offer their opinions as to how the new car will look and drive, customers will get the first look at a production-intent vehicle with its world premiere at the London Motor Show in late July.
Further technical details of the all-new Focus RS will be released closer to launch.

I really wish we'd get this car....I also wish Ford would stop calling the 5cyl a "Duratec" motor already. We know its Volvo 5cyl that they never could have managed on their own. Give credit where its due.

They can call it what they want, as they own Volvo.
Stop baaaaaaawing.

This I know. Volvo owner and enthusiast.

Please god just give it to us as a C30R

so this is still using the volvo 2.5 and not a turbo version of the 2.5 cyl in the new 6's (i would expect the next round of speed6 and speed3 to run a turbo of the previous enlarged 4cyl 2.3)? granted the front does remind me of an s40/c30 with the 2.5t...
i guess it does say based on the focus st and last i read that carried the lower output volvo 2.5t (as opposed to the 2.3t ms3, ms6, cx7).

Couldn't manage on their own? COULDN'T MANAGE ON THEIR OWN? As if Ford engineers are all drooling babes next to the VAUNTED masters at VOLVO. That's probably one of the most assinine things I've ever heard anyone say Mr. "Volvo Owner and Enthusiast". As if saying that gives you the right to belittle the men and women who gave us the Ford GT. You, who have never engineered more than a sandwich. I seriously just laugh and laugh.

It's especially confusing because there is a Duratec 2.5l V6 and now a 2.5l I4 as well.

Omfg, I'm glad I wasn't drinking when I read this part: "You, who have never engineered more than a sandwich."
Gold, Nellydesign you're pure gold!

i dont understand why there is no 4wd, its already a volvo engine, and im sure they could do something with the 4wd setup off the v50 which is a similar sized car, obviously it'd require new floors but for 280bhp it'd be worth it. im going to go out on a limb and say this will be a lot of a handful.

I agree, it's disappointing the RS has lost its AWD. The previous RS's had AWD and from what I remember, were awesome cars. It's too bad cost-savings, marketing/pricing, or whatever reason caused them to delete the AWD... this would've been an awesome Evo/STI competitor, especially if the USDM Focus SVT was any indicator of what Ford can do if they actually try on to make a competitive sport compact.
P B 12:07PM (6/12/2008)
Nope, the last RS was front wheel drive and only packed 212 Hp. The older RS Cosworth was four wheel drive, but no Focus has ever been.

P B... you're absolutely right! Just did a wiki lookup. I'm actually a little confused as to how I got the idea that the RS was AWD. Maybe the WRC connection? oh well. It'd be cool, nonetheless to have an AWD Focus RS though. =)

Holy body of Christ and all that is good! That is the Focus I WANT! Please push the remainder of the NA Focus turds off into a smelter and get this thing here ASAP!

It is really nice looking, I can't believe I'm saying this, but it is kinda eye-catching.
why not the LS2LS7? 11:21AM (6/12/2008)
I'll take the Cobalt SS/TC instead, at least if the mag reviews are correct. Road and Track says it is faster in the slalom than a Ferrari F430. That seems good enough for me.
And it's here today.
