Click above for a gallery of the V10 Audi R8.

We've been following the developments surrounding the V10-powered R8 for what seems like eons. But today, we received the most definitive proof yet; engine-bay shots and a video of a white prototype shot in Florida. According to members of AudiWorld, a few V10 mules have been handed out to current, and supposedly trustworthy, R8 owners for evaluation, sporting oval exhaust pipes and a revised fascia. While that's a rather unconventional move on Audi's part, it's proof that the automaker is getting ready to launch the new RS8 (or R10) in the near future.

Hit the jump to hear the V10-powered R8 stretching its legs.

That sounds exactly like a Gallardo. I'm sure Lamborghini isn't going to be happy.

        @Carlos
You mean the same Lamborghini that is owned by Volkswagen. The same Volkswagen that owns Audi....

Okay and...? Lamborghini is the first purveyor of this engine, and their still not going to be happy about the R8 eating at its sales. Also if it were up to Porsche the TT, R8, and all of Lamborghini would be gone as they all eat into Porsche's sales.

You mean the same Lamborghini that is owned by Volkswagen. The same Volkswagen that owns Audi.......Which are ALL now owned by Porsche, who's probably the least happiest of the whole bunch.

By the way, wouldn't it just suck to be the owner of an R8-V8 and have Audi call you up, not just to flaunt the V10 in your face, but ask that you play with one for awhile, knowing that they are going to take it away from you at some point in the near future?

      RS8 or R10?

You never know, could be. To me though, the most obvious name would be "R8 RS". I mean just because the model name has an R in it already, doesn't mean it makes sense to have it serve dual purpose for "RS" moniker also. And R10 sounds like a whole different model. Plus, RS8 would collide with the name of a theoretical V10 turbo powered A8-based car. Even if such a car may never exist, why confuse things?
I must say, i agree with you on that.

i was thinking more along the lines of "R8 S" for this V10 model and then, the "R8 RS" version could be a much lighter version with perhaps a twin-turboed V8 or TT V10. You know, strip some of the luxuries, but in bucket seats, no storage area, etc.

Does anyone else notice the mis-shift? Does this mean it will have a traditional manual trans?
When he shifts from reverse to drive, it clunks into gear with a very e-gear-ish sound.
Yeah I heard that crappy shifting too..so probably.
Since the normal R8 has a manual i don't see why this shouldn't have one.

Long long time ago (in galaxy far far away), I actually saw a video of the R8 that was released right around the time of it's debut as a concept car. So, I think it had to be one of the first videos of the R8.

I saw it on video google.

The video looked bootlegged because the picture quality was bad, and I don't know if it was intended to be released for the public.

Anyways, in one part of the video, they gave some stats on the new car: It was to be a V-10 biturbo generating 610 bhp. So, perhaps Audi designed it as such, and these "early" versions of the car are just detuned versions of what it should be; just to milk people.

Later, the video was taken off google, or I just can't find it anymore.
