Click above for more images of the Volvo XC70 pickupVolvo has been known for its safety and practical nature since the company's inception, but what we never expected to see from the Swedish automaker is a sport 'ute. A quick-witted photographer snapped up a few pics of an
XC70 outside the Volvo museum in Sweden that has been converted for pickup duty, and it looks pretty damn good. Surprisingly, the Volvo ute looks exceptionally well built, thanks to the efforts of Swedish coachbuilder Dalbo Fordonsteknik. While it won't be confused with an El Camino or Ford Falcon, it has a small but usable bed, a shark fin-like design in profile, and what looks like some covered space behind the front seats.

And what would that be pulling this cool looking pickup... Do I spy Volvo rear light clusters on that six wheeled truck?
Shotgunner @ May 13th 2008 10:41AM
damn, beat me to it. Looks like a 3 axle F150 with XC90 tails. Nice wheels on the trailer too.
Oh, and the car's pretty cool as well
Wyce @ May 13th 2008 10:43AM
Looks like XC90 rear.
Paul @ May 13th 2008 10:44AM
If you read the post at Carscoop, here are some more photos of the 6 wheel pickup (and it is an XC90)

Seriously, like a 6 wheel XC90. Didnt think getting a shot of that would've been worth it i guess?
Mobius_1 @ May 14th 2008 9:49AM
The two coolest custom Volvos in one picture, Wow!
imoore @ May 13th 2008 10:46AM
Nice concept. Volvo should build it. And I'm willing to bet that it will be too, by Dalbo for the Swedish market. I would like to see one of our American conversion specialists do something like this for the US.
Disgruntled Goat @ May 13th 2008 10:58AM
Yuck, the BRAT lives. All it needs is two rear facing jump seats. No thank you.
Soccer Mom @ May 13th 2008 11:07AM
Behold! With oil climbing towards inevitable $200, the future of N.American trucks is before you!
Jason @ May 13th 2008 11:45AM
For small trucks, yeah. Too bad it's going to take the auto companies, all of them, not just Detroit, way to long to realize it. GM almost got it, but decided for some idiotic reason to position the G8 'Ute as a muscle truck/car vs a utility vehicle.
Alex @ May 13th 2008 11:11AM
Very cool looking ute, I think it looks even better than the pontiac coming to market.
Elliott @ May 13th 2008 11:14AM
*Cue Jaws theme*
Mike @ May 13th 2008 11:23AM
Ford Falcon? I'm guessing they mean Ranchero?
Either way - I wouldn't be surprised to see it at an upcoming show.
jamie @ May 13th 2008 12:28PM
Mike
Ford Falcon Ute is what they are referring to. Only in Australia, eh? Actually Alan is Mulally-ing about importing this cutie from Oz to satisfy the Yankee Doodles with head banger tendencies to compete with GM Holden's Sport Ute which is headed this way already.

Awfully huge B-pillar! Luckily, Volvo has blind-spot technology...
Dave @ May 13th 2008 11:31AM
Will the jump seats have integrated booster seats and curtain airbags?
Will @ May 13th 2008 12:01PM
That's pretty fantastic. I always enjoy it when those staid Swedes get a little crazy.
Victor @ May 13th 2008 12:37PM
THIS Is what happens when the swedes get a bit crazy with cars:

This isn't the first Volvo 'ute. Here's one from Eastgate Volvo:

Well, o.k., it wasn't a company job, but it's pretty cool nonetheless!
AndrewGTO @ May 13th 2008 12:18PM
Good to see these coming. The Volvo looks nice, but I'll take the Pontiac and it's 6.0L power plant.
As far as gas goes, the DOD gives it 6cyl gas mileage as it does on my '06 Impala SS. My GTO doesn't have it, but I didn't buy it for gas mileage.
