I can't say I've heard a 3cyl diesel Smart. But, I'd doubt that the Smart diesel is built as a "fun" car more than an economical one. Many of the newer diesels sound nothing like diesels of old, or at least very little and are much more akin to small gas engines.
That said, I'd still rather hear an internal combustion engine of any type than the whirr of an electric engine or nothing at all.
