Click above for high-res gallery of ZR1 on the 'Ring spy shots

Corvette Chief Engineer (and Autoblog commenter) Tadge Juechter said last week that the new ZR1 "will be able to take the production-car track record at any racetrack" and should lap the famed Nurburgring race track in Germany in "seven minutes, twenty-something seconds." Considering Nissan just posted a new official lap time of 7:29 for the GT-R and that the GT-R V-Spec is reportedly clicking off laps in 7:25, them sounds like fightin' words. Well, the ZR1 is officially being flogged around the Ring as we speak, though no one has yet to report a lap time for this gorgeous red prototype that was spotted by KGP photographers. BridgetoGantry.com reports that yesterday there was a helicopter over the track "chasing something that sounded very V8 and awfully supercharged," so perhaps lap times will soon be forthcoming. We imagine the supercharged LS9 V8's 628 horsepower and the ZR1's 205-mph top speed will not disappoint.

by the way, the ZR1 will hand any version of the GTR it's ass in a race after about 60 when their four will drive becomes a weight burden, stock zo6's are running 10.90s with 505 hp ALL DAY LONG
        • 6 Years Ago
There's a guy who showed he ran a 10.95 on street tires in a stock Z06. So it won't do 10.90 ALL DAY LONG on street tires, but apparently it'll do close once in a while.
Yes indeed. A paddle-shifted manual alone saves greater than a second each lap.

And the GT-R takes high-speed corners much better than any Corvette so far, and practically any other car. The AWD is not a burden, its a traction aid. Thats the whole point.

Drag races aren't really indicative of how well a car does at speed on a track.
anddddd in all race reality. Its super track/weather dependent. If it rained the GTR would more then likely destroy everything and the zr1 would be much much easier on tires (if traction control was used wisely otherwise goodbye rears) and have greater straight away speed.

Aggressive passes would be much easier in the GTR with all of that electronic trickery and the ability to get on the power very early. Racing and qualifying are quite different and I guarantee that endurance racing in the GTR would be easier considering it is such an easier car to drive in general
        • 6 Years Ago
Heh, there is 1.. maybe 2 doing the 10's, and that was under pretty much PERFECT conditions. So yea.. If you have a driver that knows the car inside and out.. has hundreds of passes to know the car.. And the day is perfect.. Then you could do it all day long.
        "four will drive"?
        on drag tires.
yeah , the AWD is far superior to RWD on any track , thats why F1 uses AWD .

      ahhh wait... errr...nevermind.
F1 is a totally different beast, and in no way should be compared to a ZR1.
Trust me, an F1 car shouldn't be compared to a regular road car. An F1 car is more like a fighter plane with it's wings upside down. I had the pleasure of being home in Jamaica on Sunday and got up close and personal with Red Bull Racing's RB2 car that was on the island on a promotional tour. Seeing and hearing that machine up close (an witnessing 200mph fly bys on a closed off public highway in the early morning) put to rest any misconception I might've had about the similarities between these and road going cars.

      The ZR1 isn't Godzilla, it's King Kong.
So does that make the GT-R spec-V 'Mechagodzilla'

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechagodzilla
        • 6 Years Ago
so if King Kong and Godzilla gets into a fight, who wins???
Sorry, but this ZR-1 is that King Kong that drank berry juice and got knocked out.

They should have saved this drivetrain and suspension for the next Corvette platform. Is this Chevy's way of milking this platform?
        The winner? Chuck Norris.
The movie "Godzilla vs King Kong" is as dumb and inconclusive as this fanboi war.
Which Godzilla, and which King Kong are we talking about?

        Stop-action King Kong/Godzilla? Or Jack Black/Matthew Broderick King Kong/Godzilla?

        Makes all the difference...
Wait, wouldn't the GTR be MechaGodzilla, since it's mostly circuit boards and microprocessors? Then the Zonda would have to be Mothra, and the ZR1 would have to be the USS Alabama from Crimson Tide.
        You following this?

""the GTR takes high speed corners much better""

hahaha When exactly did you drive either buddy?? NEVER!!

There are guys running in the 10's with stock C6 Z06's on DR's!!!!

I bet in the next year , it will be common place to see people bolt on underdrive pulleys , and long tubes and hit low low 10's if not 9's...

the GTR has lots of technology , but with that kinda power it's like bringing a pee shooter to a Gun Fight.
Hey genious, it doesn't matter how fast it is in the 1/4-mile when you're talking about cornering.

When R&T tested the GT-R vs. Z06, the exit speed of every corner was higher for the GT-R, i.e. it takes high-speed corners much better than any CURRENT Corvette.

        Nice try though.
Yea, but the thing is.. They arent running 10's everytime they go to the track. And as i said earlier, its only like 2 people that are doing it.. Who acheived it on near perfect days.

Now.. Lets look at this.. The GTR wasn't built for a dragstrip.. It wasnt designed for straight line performance. It was meant for a track, in which it totally raped the zo6.
those pictures look completely fake! the "Artist" didn't even take the time to make the wheels blurry ... and the reflection of the car doesn't show the forrest.

      looks okward ..

THE NEW VETTE WILL OUT PERFORM ANYTHING IN ITS CLASS FOR THE MONEY. BUY AMERICAN, THX HOGHAIR
      • 6 Years Ago
Hm, anyone willing to bet that the 7:29 GTR had a few extra ponies under the hood courtesy of increased boost just for the track record PR?
Actually it's pretty common in the industry. Press cars always have tweaks for extra horsepower. No reason a test mule couldn't have the same.
no 3rd party has been able to get within 20 sec of that lap time...

        nissan wouldn't lie though...
The Veyron has clocked times in the low 7:40's.
If it didn't weigh as much as a tank it would do better.

I Still...want to know what the Ferrari Scuderia and Viper ACR will do on the 'ring, I imagine with their more hardcore set ups they'd whoop the ZR1 and GTR.

And why can't I find a time for an Enzo?

I once heard a McLaren F1 LM lapped a 7:12, anyone know if that is true?
I would like to know about the ACR aswell, Heh.. Would be funny stuff if once the GTR and ZR1 pissing match is over... Chrysler just goes over there and beats both. Would make me laugh. But yea.. Im curious about the ACR.

does chevy know the Nurburgring is not a straight track?
Well let's hope that vette can do something other than smoking starts.
That's old. Vette can. It's already proven by 'lowly' Z06 everywhere, including Top Gear and other Euro tests.
I guess you just hopped out of the stasis machine from 1970?
isn´t it amazing that for no other cars expect GT-R and LF-A spy shooter handstoped laptimes are avaible?

5 bucks say the Bow-Tie-Boys are driving the F1 track and not the north loop!
Really, what difference does a few tenths of a second make for street cars, especially when both these cars are so stupidly fast and capable as it is? So much effort and overkill for bragging rights at the pub...These are cars for very different audiences anyway, so regardless of the outcome of this pissing match, it won't dissuade each car's fans.
I don't think these cars are for different audiences...I mean, you might split a room filled with import fans and american muscle fans. But for the guy who just loves a brutally fast car, regardless of the factory that spit it out, these two cars are in exactly the same class -- bang for your buck. These cars are for those of us who love to see the underdog come out on top. I love both of these cars. I'm stoked to see automakers in it for the track times and not for the status/money.
