VW Group's next small-car platform to get AWD across the board

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Audi metroproject quattro Concept.Buyers of the next generation of Volkswagen-developed small cars will have one more option box to tick when placing their order: all-wheel-drive. The new platform, dubbed PQ25, will find its way underneath a handful of new models, spanning the range from the low-end (SEAT), mid-grade (VW) and luxury (Audi). All-wheel-drive won't be an option for the new SEAT Ibiza, but consumers of the next VW Polo (specifically the CrossPolo) might be able to outfit their tiny runabout with AWD, while the Audi A1, due out in late 2009, will continue the automaker's love affair with quattro.

cool!
I'm already stoked for the MY09 A3 mild refresh that's harbingering this trend: The 2.0 TFSI DSG is now available w/ Quattro ftw, instead of only the 3.2 offering Quattro.

Count me as excited as well. That was the best news I had heard about it.

tanooki2003 @ May 6th 2008 3:49PM
Hmmm.... trying to take a page from the Mitsubishi Evo styling book I see.
This is what I call a very bad rendering. How about try not making it look like others and going back to the Audi styling 101 book. The other cars styled by Audi are more unified.

Looks like the love child of a Audi TT & a Chrysler 300.

"When I grow up, I wanna be an A6."

So, I guess Subaru was on to ze Germans with their Impreza 2008 marketing slogan "The Japanese car the Germans wish they'd made." :D

From what I've read recently the A1 should look different to this concept car. While I generally like Audi design, this car looked a bit awkward to me.
What's most interesting is the fuel efficient layout with an electric motor driving the rear and a smallish, efficient 4 banger up front (around 60 miles of travel on electric juice only is nice). A setup like this in the US would be most welcome about now if the price could be kept in check, but it looks like it won't happen since Audi/VW is sending diesels over since it is a cheaper alternative to a hybrid setup.

Let's revisit the definition of "across the board" . . .
bilbo baggins @ May 7th 2008 10:45AM
PLEASEEEE THANK YOU ...WASNT IT TIME ALREADY?! All that power and FWD is such a bad feeling! AWD or RWD :)
ZOG @ May 7th 2008 11:17AM
Oh, this thing is ugly. Just a little worried about Audi's design direction. The new TT and R8 look great, but some of these other designs . . . hmmm. Where is Peter Schreyer when you need him? (Oh wait that's right, he's over at Kia.)
