Click above for high-res version

We've been debating whether or not this is a real photo or an expert rendering, but if it is a photoshopped image of a BMW M1 prototype, then it is very convincing. According to FreshTarmac.com, this photo was taken in a hangar in Spain. It shows a sleek two-door, probably mid-engined coupe with attributes of the new M3 incorporated into its design, especially the front fenders and hood. With BMW introducing the M1 Hommage Concept at the Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este last week, we hope this means that is already considering a production version. Come on BMW, build it! Thanks for the tip, John!

Looks like a flattened M3. Looks awesome though.

if you dont think this car is excellent looking then your out of your mind, i do agree that it looks like a rendering, based on what other people have pointed out. i hope BMW is looking though *build it* cough cough

Awesome looking car... yes. But there is no way it's a real pic. Definitely a chop.

The c-pillar is oddly colored. Headlights look flattened. Wheels/tires look awkward. Driver's side fender looks bulged out too far.
Headlight assemblies are lacking a bit of depth too, kind of look like stickers...albeit super hot ones.

The front and rear halves don't seem to match up perfectly, but it looks awesome nonetheless, if a little long. I wish BMW would build something like this. Gawd, that front end is stunning.

      Looks cool.

Mid-engined? Not so much. Why would a mid-engined car need a power bulge and vents in the hood?

Besides a front-engined RWD car would reach production a lot quicker and a lot cheaper.
well it is BMW... those side vents on M3's do nothing, and the power bulge on the e46 M3 is pointless, as a normal e46 coupe hood will fit on it.

Before anyone flames I drive an e46 M3.

        Also I am 99% sure this is a photochopped e92 m3

There's only one solution here: it has 2 engines, one up front and one in the back, and they're both 500 HP V10 engines.

In the video with the BMW designer explaining the design of the M1 hommage concept, he mentions that it's strictly prototype and won't go into production. I didn't think he was just talking about that particular M1 concept (thought he meant an M1 in general)
Or maybe he was teasing us

I wish they would make some mid-engined sports car for real though

i would like to add to the comments that it is a photoshop.

first off, at first glance, it looked very much like a real car.

but, upon closer inspection, the back half of the roof looks like it was lifted directly off of an R8.

      2) wheels look awkward

      3) the headlights dont have the "depth" that real ones would have

      4) kidney grilles are a bit pixel-y and smooshed looking

      5) what is up with the red box by the headlight and infront of the door.

      6) if this was a real car, why on earth would it be in a hangar?

say that this was a real car, here were a couple of my initial thoughts: 1) Wow, that looks totally ripped off off of the R8.

      2) Why would they release a concept M1 just a few weeks ago, and then have prototype M1 that looks NOTHING like their concept.

      that is all

There is the original M3 at a dealer that this car was based off of....

As a professional CG artist I can say 100% that this is a rendering. And honestly, I can't see how you can think it isn't. The shadows alone are proof positive it's not real.
OK everybody, so we concluded this is a PS, but then this car does look quite good (could use some improvements) and BMW really should build a 911, R8 competitor
