There's another major factor at work that hasn't been mentioned yet: advertising. Ford is pushing the new Focus pretty heavily, through TV spots and other media.
That's in stark contrast to the '06 and '07 model years; as far as Ford PR was concerned, the Focus didn't exist. A shame, since that was when it still drove like a sports sedan (the new one, with its e-throttle, squishier bushings, and softer suspension, doesn't).

Desperate Found On Road Dead Company losers hoping that Americans customers will buy their falling apart ugly looking Ford Focus! Ford just cannot get their act together on safety or service! Ex Ford owner cannot handle another falling apart Ford Focus because it falls apart to much and Found On Road Dead knows that their Focus falls apart too! Ford Focus is a accident ready to happen and customers will be paying for the unnecessary repair bills like ignitions going out, struts falling apart and transmission blowing up on customers. Found On Road Dead gives excuse letters to customers letting themselves off the hook saying to bad so sad!
