Craigslist Ugly Duckling of the Day: 1965 Lancia Flavia Zagato

Zagato's designs aren't for everyone. Just as well, because they're not available to everyone, usually costing a fair penny and produced in very limited numbers. This example, however, takes the love-it-or-hate-it approach to new (or rather, old) extremes. Lancia created just 626 examples of this Zagato-designed coupe between 1963 and 1967, of which only a few reportedly remain in good condition today. (It's not quite as rare as the Lancia Zagato we brought you a couple of weeks ago, but still a genuine collector's item.) This one was made in 1965, and after failing to sell on eBay, it has now been posted on the Seattle Craigslist, for sale in Ventura, California.
The aluminum bodywork may not be the prettiest at the ball, particularly with the stock steel wheels, but you're not likely to pull up next to another one at an intersection. Back in its day, it actually sold for double the price of a Jaguar XKE, and the seller claims it's worth twice the asking price. Car collectors dream about owning at least one coachbuilt car in their collection. It's like a Mona Lisa or a diamond studded Cartier watch. Like the article said, you'll never see yourself at a stoplight.

boy, if that were true, it would be sold. Its worth whatever the next buyer will pay for it. anything prior is speculation.
He thinks its worth 60 but if he cant find anyone to 'second the motion', then he will have the finest unsold 60K car on sale for 30K.

In pic 18: WHAT is up with the gearshift? Looks like it was inspired by Salvador Dali.
Looks like a boxer engine under the hood?
I'd call this a half and half design. Looks good up to the B pillar and then it just doesn't work for me.

I personally always loved the Lancia Beta HPE. A bit like an Italian Volvo P1800es. The European market Betas drove really well too, so much better than the US market models which were weighed down with huge ugly tacked on rubber bumpers and constrictive smog equipment to go with the dim non-halogen headlights and the higher center center of gravity so those ugly bumpers could meet US regs. Ahh, the 70's!

This car is stunning! The looks are quirky for sure, but then I've always loved quirky, interesting cars. I'd rather drive something that polarizes opinions than one of the dozens of lookalike cars on the road today.

Its really ugly.
I love quirky cars, love (some of) Zagato's designs, but this poor thing is ungainly at best. Id spring for a Citroen DS or XM or any old Alfa before i'd spend 30k on this... but it is lovable for some reason, isn't it.

Honestly I like it. Of course I would defile it by taking advantage of the lightweight aluminum body by putting the largest most powerful engine that would fit in the sucker.
Can you say, Buick Turbo V6? (Hey it looks kinda tight under that hood.)
