Nice review.
While I know why car manufacturers insist on putting the proprietary iPod docks in their cars, I can't help to wonder what the hell are they thinking. Sure, everyone and their dog has an iPod, but it'd be much better if the mp3 player interface was using standard ports like USB so that those of us who don't worship the God of Jobs would also be able to plug in their music players into these things.

Couldn't agree with you more...proprietary connections are always a losing deal with me. What happens when Apple decides they want to change that ipod connector? Then there will be millions of cars with the equivalent of 8 track players inside of them. Stick with the simple USB or headphone aux jack, connectors that EVERYONE can use and will still be around for another decade.

tpp,
The iPod connector is a $200 option. A standard aux jack is standard though stupidly placed in the glovebox. No it's not USB but it'll at least let you use your brown Zune. :o)

"but it'd be much better if the mp3 player interface was using standard ports like USB"
You mean like Ford's Sync?
tpp @ Apr 9th 2008 1:40PM
Jim, yes, the interfaces Ford Sync offers are better. Standard ports win over proprietary ones any day.
Ford Sync as a whole on the other hand is a different matter. Never buy version 1 of anything Microsoft makes. That's all I'm going to say.

I'm with you guys here. I won't buy a car if it has a proprietary ipod plug.

I'm with you all.
I always refuse to follow the trend and I try to be original, I bought a Sandisk Sansa MP3 player. Cheaper than an Ipod and had more features and memory at the time.
