Sure, everyone and their dog has an iPod, but it'd be much better if the mp3 player interface was using standard ports like USB so that those of us who don't worship the God of Jobs would also be able to plug in their music players into these things.

tpp

Comments on In the Autoblog Garage: Volkswagen Jetta 2.5 SE

Couldn't agree with you more...proprietary connections are always a losing deal with me. What happens when Apple decides they want to change that ipod connector? Then there will be millions of cars with the equivalent of 8 track players inside of them. For all the engineers at VW, I don't understand why they couldn't come up with a 4-cylinder with close specs and better MPG. Japanese makers are able to do it. That said, I like the Jetta, but a publication called it "Jetta the Hut" and that's how I think of it. Far from a cut-rate 3 Series, it is turning more into a heavy German Accord.

Xcountryflyer

Comments on In the Autoblog Garage: Volkswagen Jetta 2.5 SE

16.5 mpg! A five cylinder is more powerful than a four cylinder, and this one is tuned to be reliable. Last I looked, the Rabbit has an "Excellent" reliability score from Consumer Reports -- that's the score previously reserved for Hondas and Toyotas. :) Hehe, of course I could always be wrong...

Chase

Comments on In the Autoblog Garage: Volkswagen Jetta 2.5 SE

Doesnt the US get the 2.0T Jetta? Or, another wonderful engine, the twin-charged 1.4TSI (thats right: a miniscule 1.4liter four pot) putting out 170hp - which is enough, after all. Averaged over 30mpg going down the curvy PCH. And that was with ME driving it (stomping, quickly swerving, often passing other cars, etc). Never had a problem with gas mileage on this car.

My issue has always been the remaining perception that it's a "chick car." I always end up reminding people it's not mine. This is despite the fact I don't think the car deserves that reputation since the new Jetta was released in 2005. It's actually been a great car - luxurious, nice road manners, very smooth ride for its class, etc.

Definitely would recommend over a Civic or a Tercel. I'd say it's really between the Jetta and the Mazda3 in this class.
