I think that the real issue I'd the $3000+ that one is expected to pay for roughly $800 in upgrades. A strut bar, an intake, muffler and some different but not super high end interior trim doesn't justify the price. Xenon lights, an independent rear end, 50 more hp or at least 2 out of 3 and people would argue
over them.

Well...Ford does have one of those options: Xenon lights. They are a new option for 08 and look pretty slick at night.
