VIDEO: Cadbury ad light on chocolate, heavy on airport truck racing
Have you ever watched a commercial and wondered what the heck the ad had to do with the product? Of course you have. But sometimes we don't mind, like with this commercial for Cadbury chocolate. You wouldn't know it was for Cadbury unless they told you so at the end. But follow the jump to view a video that is sure to put a smile on your face – now and every time you look out the tiny portal of a plane as you wait for takeoff. And you thought your teddy bears had fun at night...

That was a great little commercial.
Not so much for chocolate, but for screwing around on company time.

Does anybody else wanna bet this idea shows up on Top Gear? They've already got the abandoned runways.

I prefer gorillas drumming to Phil Collins.

Not Phil Collins. That was Queen. The drummer in this case is Roger Taylor.

I'd prefer to see those machines in a real race.

Interesting to watch, but I doubt that ad will sell any chocolate.
It's been jokingly said that half of the money a company spends on an ad is wasted but nobody knows which half. Well, I'd say more than half was wasted showing a truck race instead of telling me why I should buy a Cadbury candy bar.

there's much more to advertising than product information.
i would say the success metric for this ad is the number of people that talk about it, the buzz it makes as a neat, off the wall ad.
part of the buzz is even "what does this have to do with chocolate" NOTHING.
advertising is about making you remember/think about something, that's it.
you, and i, and 20+ people have taken 5 mins of their day to COMMENT about it, its clearly a success.

In the past, banks advertised "to get their name in front of the public" which does make sense because people must know a company exists before dealing with it. And you're correct about creating buzz which helps so long as the buzz is favorable.
As a former bank marketing person, I used to say that if all a bank wanted to do was promote its name, it should set one of its branches on fire and it would get plenty of free publicity for nothing via the radio, TV, and local newspapers.
With so many sounds and images trying to get our attention I always preferred ads that actually SOLD something.
But as you correctly said, we've devoted more time to this ad than perhaps any other ad vying for our attention today. Maybe if I see a Cadbury bar at Safeway tomorrow..........

Isn't this what is called an "anti-ad"?
But yeah, I love those weird and cool, unique airport trucks. Now I totally want to learn all about the different kinds and all the specs!

Didnt have anything remotely to do with chocolate, but i enjoyed Freddie and Queen doing the song, so that was the saving grace.

In Europe, Cadbury is incredibly well known... In Fact Cadbury is bigger name then Hersey's is in the US in Britan. There are alot of major US brands that have commercials that have nothing to do with product and just have a short tag at the end.
