Carbon fiber, that uber-cool mix of graphite fibers and epoxy that used to be reserved for exotic race cars and fighter jets, is seemingly everywhere these days. Lightweight and space-age, the material is now directly associated with speed and performance. If you are an automaker offering a high-performance vehicle, you had better slap some CF on the car just to keep up with the federation (nobody really cares if it actually helps performance). The BMW M3 Coupe sports a carbon fiber roof, the Porsche GT3 RS a carbon fiber spoiler, and the Nissan GT-R a carbon fiber underbody air diffuser (most of the mainstream automotive applications are technically known as "carbon reinforced plastic").
Taking advantage of the trend, the team over at Carbon Fiber Gear will sell you such must-have items as carbon fiber humidors, carbon fiber guitars, and carbon fiber shoes, but we like a carbon fiber product for the computer that won't lighten the wallet at all. It's an assortment of free downloadable carbon fiber desktops, in resolutions from 1024x768 to 1680x1050. We honestly don't know if they will speed up your refresh rates, but if carbon fiber is good for the Bugatti Veyron, it should help your display. Right? Thanks for the tip Dave!

Until ten minutes ago I just had a plain gray desktop with some boring XFCE as desktop environment. Now I have carbon fiber. And tomorrow everything will be gray again.

Oh... wait. :(

My computer just crashed. Watch out for the knife-like debris.

actually, in theory, since many people use some sort of elaborate photo as a desktop background, and then switched to a simple pattern, there would be a performance difference because of an increase in free video memory.
i just don't think you could notice without measuring with some sort of software, on any computer newer than 5 years.
MajorGeek @ Mar 18th 2008 6:49PM
Pretty accurate, any bell or whistle requires video and system memory, best enhancement for performance would be to disable all visual effects so it's a nice and ugly grey color like Windows 3.11 or Linux. Ive done it before, but prefer a little color.
Cool idea, but, the wallpaper just in the example monitors pictures looks a bit "busy" for me like staring at one of those pictures with a hidden image inside it, without any hidden image, of course ;)

Fun fact: Whenever you see (aftermarket) carbon fiber car parts, chances are good it's not actually carbon fiber ;)

This carbon fiber background is good for at least an additional 1 gig of ram, right?
Allan @ Mar 18th 2008 9:02PM
Na... this will only give you 500 MHz... now if you get your laptop Colorwared yellow... THAT'LL give you your 1gb of ram.
Yar @ Mar 18th 2008 11:15PM
I just tried out the background, and after 5 minutes it's already started to yellow. I want my money back...
