With things like cheap gas and the value of a dollar slowly being taken from us, it's good to see that somebody wants to give us something. For the US release of the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Polyphony has thrown in features the Japanese version didn't get.
There's a drift mode that judges drivers on three parameters, there's two-player, split-screen racing and there are new events and challenges for racers online and offline that can support up to 16 racers simultaneously. Plus, there's a new track, bringing the total to six. And for us, that means there's a new list of excuses we're going to need to come up with when people start asking "Where have you been?" and "You look tired -- were you up late last night?"
In case the cars, tracks and gameplay aren't enough, Winding Road has a new trailer video of the GT5 Prologue featuring a fair bit of Ferrari action -- and that's never a bad way to start the week. Follow the jump to see the complete list of tracks, and check out our updated hi-res photo gallery of the prologue below.

Stunning graphics.
However, not crazy about the car list.
Franz @ Mar 10th 2008 1:43PM
Me either, but there are a few good ones on it. I'm also glad that we finally get to drive Ferraris.
amdforever @ Mar 10th 2008 1:50PM
To be really honest, I don't think the graphics is even that good...
I mean, look at the buildings. 2D bump mapping, are you kidding me? Are we back in 1999 again?
Pete @ Mar 10th 2008 1:49PM
This is not the final list. Simply the list of cars you can play with as of now. The official game hasn't been released yet!

Since i do not have a playstation anymore, i havent really kept up the the whole gran turismo deal. is this prologue just a preview of the whole new GT5 game, or is the prologue the actual complete game?
i can understand the lack of cars if it is just a preview type thing of whats to come, can someone inform me?
Tagg @ Mar 10th 2008 2:13PM
Its just a preveiw and will cost about $20 less than the full game which will be out sometime this decade!
Greg @ Mar 10th 2008 2:14PM
You're about right. It's a preview of GT5 which is still some time away. It takes them a while to create each GT installment so they do these to get some revenue in the meantime. The GT games are massive, and I imagine the cost to produce an entire one is tremendous.
David(Postal) @ Mar 11th 2008 11:54AM
looks great but I agree wake me when GT5 comes out.
tankd0g @ Mar 10th 2008 1:52PM
Does your car still get "tasered" when you hit something insead of actually damaged?
ianw33 @ Mar 10th 2008 2:05PM
that is the biggest problem i had with the GT series, especially when i got an xbox and started doing the forza thing. while GT took the cake when it came to over all look and realism feel, it just all went away when you could go into a wall at 80mph and not dent the car or anything.
The first GT's had damage, why did the do away with it?
2004m3driver @ Mar 10th 2008 2:46PM
They had problems implementing it realistically and precisely. Well that was their excuse anyways. They could easy just add some obvious ones though, like if you hit a wall head on at 200mph race should end. Still, the game looks stunning.
XGM @ Mar 10th 2008 5:26PM
I do hope there is visual damage. The reason that they coudn't put it in the game before was that some companies that allowed their cars in-game did not want them to have visual damage, so because of that they didn't put visual damage in the game.
Fact is this is a sim, and from what i heard until now is that hitting a wall will slow the car alot, so there may not be damage for now, it will probably cost the race hitting stuff.
RG @ Mar 10th 2008 2:06PM
Has there been any word on damage or the addition of Porsche?
Leo M. @ Mar 10th 2008 2:10PM
yeah, without Porsche, it's not worth it :)
I'm serious, btw.
joe @ Mar 10th 2008 2:20PM
don't they just put in Ruf instead? it's not just GT's problem, it is also a problem for forza and any non-ea publisher.
Sam @ Mar 10th 2008 3:20PM
um...Forza has porsche.
RG @ Mar 10th 2008 3:38PM
Yes, RUF is one aspect of Porsche that they partially have covered.
I am talking 917, 908, 935, 956/962, GT1... a wealth of road-racing cars that no marque has even come close to matching.
THAT is why I wanted Porsche.
BAMF @ Mar 10th 2008 2:13PM
When are we going to get to drive a Bugatti in one of these games!?? its been out long enough already!
Parkerman @ Mar 10th 2008 2:29PM
In order for a car to be in the GT games, They have to be able to have the car on hand.. test it.. and drive it... Pull specs from it, draw it.. and render it and such. Thats the reason why Ferrari is just now being a part of it if I remember right.
brian @ Mar 10th 2008 3:29PM
Parkerman:
The reason Ferrari has not been in the game in the past (along with Lamborghini, Mclaren and Porsche) is that EA locked up an exclusivity agreement with these companies for its Need for Speed series. That's why they haven't had them. They had ways of getting around some, like the Mclaren F1 being a BMW (but only as a race car), and the Porsche's as RUF.
