There's a niche opening up in North America, and Mini, Mazda, VW and Acura are already filling it (Saturn is trying, too, but isn't there yet; Saab is priced too high and lacks product).<br><br>Alfa could probably sneak in there.  They're not really appreciably worse than VW, and have more raw appeal than Acura and more "premium-ness" than Mazda.
