As a fan of both the cars you mention, this abomination has nothing that is deserving of the Delta name, the Integrale really had some classic looks. It was boxy done as Volvo could only dream of. And I mean that, of course, in the best way possible. A shame this car looks so....... plain.

JD

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

On the bright side, at least they didn't completely besmirch the past by debuting it in Martini Racing colors.

why not the LS2LS7?

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

Agreed wholeheartedly.

This thing is an abomination. The Stratos, as stunning as it was, has no bearing on the Lancia of today, and this car is actually a decent evolution of the previous post Integrale Dealta. I think it's elegant while retaining some restrained and tasteful character, although the rear is too much like a MK1 Nissan Murano.

shiftright

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

I find the rear is in keeping with Lancia's own Thesis and Ypsilon.

Dazza

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

I agree, and it's well done, but on the proportions of the Delta it reminds me of the Murano, especially the D pillar proportion, which isn't a bad thing, because the Murano is a good looking car. Instead, it's been repositioned as a brand for the discerning older gentleman who doesn't want a Fiat but can't afford a Maserati.

However, Lancia does appears to be in Alfa's shadow these days - the corporate bigwigs could have improved brand differentiation by giving the Delta more of a green tinge, e.g. a stop-start system, intelligent alternator control, AGM battery, gear change indicator, tire pressure monitor, CO2 sensor for the A/C etc.

A souped-up version of the Delta could still happen if there's enough of a public outcry, but it would probably wear an Abarth badge.

I like the side and unusual rear of the design as well as the two-tone interior. However, that trademark parrot beak grille is still a bit of an eyesore IMHO. The circular lamps inside the headlights are reminiscent of the sharp Alfa 159, but the elongated casing looks like it came off the flabby Peugeot 308. The lines of the front bumper are busier than a bishop's hat and the contraption looks oddly separated from the upper half of the front fascia.

Perhaps the most important feature gets drowned out in the press release: a new 1.8L GDI Turbojet mill rated at 200hp that will replace the old Multijet engine. There's also only one small diesel engine option - at 150hp, Fiat's 1.9L diesel might be a better match for the Delta's no doubt considerable heft, even if it does emit 31gCO2/km more.

rgseidl

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

1.8 direct injection turbo dont replace Multijet which is diesel... there is coming also new generation diesel 2.0 Multijet which will replace in the future the current 1.9 jtdm perhaps. The Stratos and the Delta Integrale were only a parenthesis, albeit a very successful one. The new Delta is quite well in tune with classic Lancias such as Astura, Aurelia and Flaminia.

Niels Jonassen

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

It's cool, I like it, I'd like to own it.
But it's not half as cool as the old Delta.

SPG

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

Lancias were traditionally very well made, elegant, innovative cars. As Niels says, this harks back to mainstream Lancias of old, which is where Fiat is trying to place the marque. It may well find a following amongst people who prefer something a bit different. Also, it should be rather a good drive.
The Delta Integrale was indeed a one off and never truly representative of the company at all. It appears that the Integrale was, however, the car which has marked Lancia's turf in the States.

Colin Smith

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

190 hp from a 1.9 l diesel? are they sure?
I don't believe it... this is probably a typo.....

Richard

Comments on Geneva 2008: Lancia unveils new Delta

Richard,

I know that it's hard to believe but it's true that Fiat's new 1.9 JTTDM will be at least 190bhp. Fiat have already sold a down-rated version to SAAB with 175bhp, which I drove in a SAAB 93 and it's amazing. I can't wait to drive the 190bhp version, preferably in an Alfa 159!

The Delta will be the first Lancia for relaunch in Ireland and the UK. I imagine that it will be sold through Fiat Dealers but does anyone know when the Delta will be launched in IE&UK??

Con
