Hyundai's biggest issue in terms of looks is that they don't have a unified design across the different models. There's no brand association with their designs, so their designs end up looking either generic or awkward (as is the case here).
They're on the right track in terms of focusing on one engineering aspect (that is, isolation and ride comfort), so there's at least that. If they tightened up their designs a bit, added some sort of design language (that wasn't ugly and ill-proportioned), and somehow were able to maintain their current price point, they'd do really well.

I think the sedans of Hyundai (Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Azera) do have some visual similarities. But regardless, unified design language can be overrated. If you look at Chevy, which essentially is putting the same front end on the Traverse as it is on the 2009 Aveo5, you begin to hope for a bit more variety.
But don't get me started on Ford's three bar grille thing. AGH.

Yeah, I agree. You can very easily end up with a very homogeneous fleet -- however, I do think it can be done well (Audi and Merc [except the B class] do it well, for instance).
I have yet to see an American car company unify their designs in a good way. I think Pontiacs and Dodges, on the whole, do not look good (and they're probably the ones who do it most consistently). I have high expectations of Ford, and if the Fiesta is any indication of their future models, then their entire brand will benefit.
