Saab is showing off its latest addition at the Geneva Motor Show today by adding a smaller model at the entry point to its lineup. The new Saab 9-X BioHybrid is strictly a concept at this stage, but it will almost certainly pop up in Saab showrooms before long. The 9-X is built on General Motors' next generation Global Compact Car platform (a.k.a. Delta). That's the platform that underpins cars like the Opel Astra, Chevy Cobalt and, in the future, the Chevy Volt. Given the size, the 9-X will probably become the 9-1 when it hits the streets.
Like other recent Saab concepts, this one carries forth much of the same design language, particularly in the nose and fenders. In profile, it's apparent that the windshield has a much more pronounced wraparound than recent production Saabs or the 9-4X crossover. The roofline has a distinct downward slope toward the back of the car, and the concept features active aerodynamics that help this compact hatchback from the wind. Above 70 km/h, for instance, a spoiler that wraps over the rear pillar and a diffuser below the back bumper extend to increase the effective length of the body and reduce drag. Underhood, the 9-X has a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder that, in typical Saab fashion, is optimized for running on ethanol and earns an output of 200 hp when doing so. Fuel efficiency is enhanced by a next generation GM Hybrid system, which we'll here more about in Geneva, as well. The battery charging capability is further enhanced by a solar panel mounted on the roof. Overall, the 9-X/1 could be a capable competitor to the MINI in the premium compact segment that's fiercely competitive in Europe, but has yet to heat up in the U.S.

Boosting Efficiency in Compact Design and Performance
The Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept is a vivid vision of what a future compact car from Saab could look like. It is designed to reflect the priorities of youthful customers who seek progressive looks, responsible performance and high-tech communications, all in a sporty, fun-to-drive package.
Exploring design themes from Saab's award-winning Aero X and earlier 9X concepts, the 9-X BioHybrid also demonstrates the potential for ultra-efficient power from a 200 hp (147 kW), 1.4-liter BioPower turbo engine backed by GM's next-generation Hybrid system. Projected combined cycle CO2 emissions of just 105 g/km on E85 fuel are testimony to the promise of this package (see separate release for details).
The interior showcases an entirely new expression of Saab's driver-focused cockpit design, together with innovative, seamless connectivity for personal nomadic devices and a rear cargo deck with a 'low friction' loading system.
"This car is all about efficiency in design and performance," says Anthony Lo, Director of Advanced Design at General Motors Europe, who led the 9-X BioHybrid design team in co-operation with the Saab Brand Center in Sweden.
With its 'turbine' wheels placed at all four corners, minimal bodywork overhangs and an extended roof line, the proportions of the three-door Saab 9-X BioHybrid bring a dynamic, new dimension to conventional compact 'hatchback' looks.
The smooth 'fuselage' bodywork, now without any visible handles or door mirrors, the bold 'wraparound' window graphic and deep front grille are all themes inspired by the Aero X coupé concept shown at Geneva two years ago.
The car's distinctive 'shooting brake' silhouette and rear functionality are developed from the 9X multi-role concept shown at Frankfurt in 2001. "You could say we designed this car from back to front, "says Lo. "The shape of the 9X is right for a car of this size, and the longer roof line helps the aerodynamics as well as providing more rear headroom and interior space."
Echoing Saab's roots in aircraft design, the 9-X BioHybrid also explores the potential for using active aerodynamics to reduce drag – and fuel consumption – at cruising speeds. Above 70 kph (43 mph), the upper and lower bodywork is reshaped as the roof spoiler automatically extends to further lengthen the roof line and an underbody diffuser is deployed from the bottom of the rear bumper.
The four-seater cabin introduces an entirely new execution of Saab's driver-focused cockpit design. The central, floor-mounted console, with its angled controls and displays, is now eliminated. Instead, the driver- focused layout incorporates a main instrument panel that sweeps out from the top of the door moulding, arching across the driver. The embedded 3-D graphics appear to be 'frozen' in ice, continuing a Scandinavian design theme first seen in the Aero X.
Reflecting the needs of youthful customers, who expect easy access to multi-media both inside and outside the car, Saab has co-operated with Sony Ericsson in providing seamless in-car connectivity for a range of nomadic devices. The result is a wireless interface for streaming data, entertainment and satellite navigation functions for display and use. The interface also allows the simultaneous use of multiple devices when passengers are in the car.
At the rear, the cargo deck features an electrically-powered slide-out floor, which is activated when the bottom half of the split tailgate drops down The floor, and the back of the folding rear seats, is covered by 'high friction' rubber carpeting, which 'grips' items and holds them securely in place. For easy loading and unloading, aluminum bars automatically rise up and down as the tailgate is opened and closed.
The treatment of light is an important part of Scandinavian design and this is evident in the use of variable, white ambient lighting inside the cabin. The level of suffused illumination can be changed in intensity from bright, cold to warm and soft. It's a personalized feature that could even be programmed, for example, to reflect the pattern of the changing seasons
"This car shows how our concept work can be carried forward into a compact format," adds Anthony Lo. "It has a number of features which we will be developing further, such as the new driver-focused design theme, the importance of clean, uncluttered surfaces and the easy, seamless connectivity inside the car."

design team needs to be replaced.these nothings going on the sides and the back is screwed up.Saab & Gm has really dropped the ball.Does it even compare to the Astra?SAAB had a chance to really earn some young professionals this clearly miss the mark.If the final product looks like this either Saturn or VW will get my money.

Hyundai has always used SAAB design themes. Mitsubishi and Subaru has also used it IE:sports back cocnept the designer even say he took cues from older Saabs.

your right Chase, tech wise it's great but the design falls flat I hope they can work out the kinks in time for production. IE: define the fenders and center line -more ,round off the back, add the black outline to ground effects all the way around.also thin out the chunky roof;other then that back and side add the most work.just my 2 cents!

Ok, so, the Mini has been around since, what, 2003? And it's taken GM this long to produce a _concept_? Wow, real "pull the tail on the dinosaur" syndrome at work here.
I like this, I really do. I wish the windshield rake was a little less dramatic (more Saab 99, less Acura NSX). The problem is this is a another pie-in-the-sky concept, from a company that's famous for flashy concepts and mundane production cars, for a brand whose newest product is from 2003 (9-3), whose flagship dates from 1998 (9-5), and whose premium product is a lame-duck rebadge (9-7x). By the time this reaches production, it'll be fighting for it's life against similar offerings from other makes--assuming GM doesn't do it's usual "the best competitor is the competitor in your own showroom" act and sell a Saturn or Chevy/Pontiac version as well.
Saab needed something to sell in 2005. It does not need concept and concept with nothing to show for it.

So, if I rebadge a Chevy Impala and sell it as a Cadillac and price it so that it sells well, making it "the best selling, most reliable Cadillac", does mean it's a good thing?
No.
Ditto here. The 9-7x sells ok _for a Saab_ but it's sales (400 units) are miserable; they were miserable last year when they sold 800. The 9-3 does outsell it (1100-1500 units/month), though, so I don't know where the heck you got that figure from.
The 9-7x was a waste of resources. Saab could (and should) have spent the money on the 9-5. Heck, they could have redressed a Saturn Vue (or Cadillac SRX) and it'd be a better fit. Some dimwit at GM saw that Saab was losing customers because people were buying SUVs instead of wagons. The problem is, they were buying Acura MDXs, BMW Xs, Mercedes MLs and Lexus RXs, and a slightly nicer Chevy-friggin-Trailblazer is _not_ going to staunch the bleeding, not against that kind of competition.
And reliable? Please. If you wanted reliable, you wouldn't have looked at a Saab in the first place. You'd have signed the papers on an MDX or RX350 and not even thought about Saab for a second.
Let's call a spade a spade: GM has no idea, and more importantly, no _intention_ of seriously fixing Saab. Which is unfortunate, because unlike Buick and Pontiac, Saab's perception wasn't completely in the toilet when this all started. It's the same cockup they made with Saturn, and from Saturn is now _barely_ recovering from (and still might not, if GM doesn't stop knifing Saturn on Chevy's behalf).

i'm baffled with the term "mini-killler" or "mini-competitor" when it comes to comparing Mini with a car that shares platform with Opel Astra, Cobalt and other cars that are all significantly larger than Mini. To me, this looks more like a VW Polo, Renault Clio, Peugeot 207 competitor. Mini is still, even though it has grown, much more mini than this thing (judging from the pictures)

Well, Saab never told it would be a mini competitor, and everybody knew for quite a while that this car would be based on the Delta platform, so I don't know were that idea came from... :)

if you ask me, only true size-wize competitor to Mini is Fiat 500. all other cars that try to be mini competition are really larger
