BMW X6 pricing and options leaks out

For some, the new BMW X6 sports activity coupe may be the car you've been waiting for. For others, the vehicle is a curiosity for embodying traits of both a crossover and sports sedan. It's got the ride height of a soft roader, but the sleek design and headroom-sacrificing profile of a performance vehicle. If this kind of cognitive dissonance appeals to you, a BMW X6 can be yours starting from $52,500 for the xDrive 35i model powered by the brand's superlative twin-turbo inline six-cylinder. That's not chump change, but is certainly less than the X6 xDrive 50i that starts at $63,000. For the extra ten grand or so, the X6 xDrive 50i is fitted with BMW's brand new twin-turbo 4.4L V8 that produces 400 hp and 450 pound feet of torque. BMW Blog also reveals a ton of optional equipment that's available for the X6, as well. These two MSRPs are just a starting point from which the cost of your X6 could take off like a rocket... that's made of money... and aimed at BMW HQ in Munich. If you require things like a navigation system ($1,900), heads-up display ($1,200) or the Active Ventilated Seat Package ($2,100), bring a lot of rocket fuel to your local BMW dealer.

"BMW's brand new twin-turbo 4.4L V8 that produces 400 hp and 450 pound feet of torque"
Doesn't the C06 make 400HP from a normally aspirated V8?

With bigger displacement and worse fuel economy, sure.

Big BMW fan/owner here, but the C6 6.2L LS2 V8 is known for it's good mileage! 18/28 MPG with a 6-speed. The Z06 500 hp version of this engine is the only 500+ hp production engine to avoid the US "gas guzzler" tax.
The 335i is rated 20/29 MPG, so the heavier X6 will definitely get less mileage than both the 335i and the Corvette.

Couldn't find stats for the X6 4.4L, but the C6 already equals the 3.5L so it should have no problem besting the 4.4L.

The LS engines get their fuel economy statistics by using gearing and throttle tricks to dupe the EPA cycle. I mean, both the auto and manual-equipped Corvettes are designed specifically to skip three gears (1-4) under normal acceleration.
I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but credit where credit's due, it's not that the LS is magically efficient, it's that GM has done some very astute powertrain management tuning to get it to be so. If you drive a Vette at all hard, then these tricks go out the window.
Carlos 3:53PM (2/27/2008)
Uh duh I think if you drive any car hard all fuel "tricks" go out the window.

Why are we even discussing similarities between a corvette and the X6 again?

i dont see people jumping this...its expensive like their other SUVs but its not as big...i dont just dont see this happening...

yeah, and the fact that it's ugly as sin isin't going to help it either. oof, this thing is a turd.

have either of you guys heard of the Cayenne?
eric 5:22PM (2/27/2008)
could this be similar in size with a RR sport? that cars kinda small too for an SUV
Matty 2:10PM (2/27/2008)
Yeah but it has a way bigger displacement and not the same fuel economy

No, it probably has better fuel economy in a smaller, lighter, simpler and less expensive package
Matty 3:00PM (2/27/2008)
The c6 corvette has an engine displacement in excess of 6 liters compared to BMW's 4.4TT. My guess is that the 4.4L engine is lighter and delivers better economy thanks to smaller displacement and forced induction. Now, the x6 probably weighs way more than the c6 corvette, but it's designed for a different purpose. Just because you can jam a bigger engine into something and get more horsepower out of it doesn't mean it will return a better driving experience. By that logic, everyone looking to buy a z06 or zr-1 should just buy a Dodge Viper, which has a bigger engine and/or more horsepower.
Scott 3:20PM (2/27/2008)
In fact the Corvette has BETTER fuel economy. Really, how hard is it to look this up on Google or Wikipedia? The base C6 mileage is equivalent to the 3.5L twin turbo in the 3-series, which is pretty impressive considering the whopping 6.2L displacement.
The Other Bob 3:25PM (2/27/2008)
Matty-
Forced induction likely means more power/liter, but it does not mean it is more efficient. An apples to Apples compariosn is the Mazda CX-7 Vs. the Ford Edge. Both are similar vehicles built on the same platform. The mazda has a Turbo Four that gets worse mileage than the NA V-6 in the Edge.
The 4.4 L BMW V-8 is not doubt larger in size (not displacement) due to it DOHC arrangment. It also has more parts and is likely heavier for the same reason.
The GM pushrod V-8 engines are some of the most effcient engines when compared to other engines putting out equal horsepower in most applications they are used.
The whole arguement that using less displacement is always better is pretty uninformed. Using a horsepower per liter comparison is equally useless. A horsepower/ pound of engine or per unit of fuel would be far more useful. Displacement means nothing.
Carlos 2:10PM (2/27/2008)
BMW just nailed their coffin shut with that price. This is going to sell just like the R class. Way too expensive and not enough exposure.

I think it depends on what market you're talking about. In the EU it'll sell like hotcakes. I see hundreds of X3s, X5s, 5, 6, and 7 series in Chicago every day. If those can sell, this can too.
Carlos 3:51PM (2/27/2008)
No it won't sell like hotcakes, especially in Europe where cars trends are veering toward smaller more efficient cars.
Khalid 4:51PM (2/27/2008)
This'll sell like crazy in the middle east. Where range rovers and hideous cayennes are on every street corner. There is definitely a market for fun to drive SUVs.
