I don't know why people keep complaining about this car. Because modern cars require so much safety equipment, the weight has gone up. When you factor this in with BMW's need to put leather and wood in everything it makes for a heavy car. There's no way the 1 Series could possibly satisfy everyone on this board. To do that, it would need to be lighter, faster, have a four cylinder engine and all for cheaper than it is now.

Some of its body lines are questionable (definitely not as homely as the new Evo or STI) but as far as making a lightweight four banger its just not going to happen. I own an Evo IX, and although it's one of the most responsive turbo cars there is in stock form, it still has a bit of lag before it scorches towards redline. The throttle response of this vehicle with correctly sized turbos could be epic. The only thing with small turbos though is not much room for top end improvement.
The older Audi/VW 1.8t owners will tell you: that tiny KKK turbo was good and responsive, but fell flat on the top end. Good luck if you're trying to get more airflow from the usual mods... the turbo can't keep up. Turbo technology has come a far way though, so lets keep our fingers crossed and see what the boys from Munich have in store.

Franz

Comments on BMW bringing aero kit for the 1-series to Geneva, tii variant rumored

The above was meant for DIRETTORE... What a load of BS. There are guys doing LS1 V8 conversions to their Mazda RX7 twin turbos and adding minimal weight around 50-60lbs. Turbos, cast iron exhaust housings, additional piping, intercoolers (especially larger front mounts) add weight. I'm sure the 100+ hp and lb/ft of torque more than made up for the added weight.

You mean to tell me that 2 turbos, piping, intercoolers, etc weigh less than 2 more cylinders on the BMW? Bull.

A side note: As a former WRX and STi owner, 1 turbo is more than enough for a 4 banger.

andrewgto

Comments on BMW bringing aero kit for the 1-series to Geneva, tii variant rumored

So there is a downgrade in the number of cylinders by 2, and it is still twin turbo...The weight savings will be no more than ~200 lbs - So how will this be faster than the current base?

If they pull this off that would be great. Hopefully they won't spoil it by having the 4 banger be less efficient than a 6...that would totally negate the benefits...It would be laughable (or just plain sad) if their twin 6 had better MPG than their twin 4...

Azsori

Comments on BMW bringing aero kit for the 1-series to Geneva, tii variant rumored

AZSori - "So how will this be faster than the current base?"
Simple. A 6cyl turbo will make more power and torque than a 4cyl turbo. Not to mention make it sooner and have a broader power band which will more than make up for the weight. I don't know who designated this 200lb figure, but that's way off and greatly exaggerated for 2 more cylinders. My 2.5L STi spooled and made hp &tq way faster than my 2.0L WRX (1000rpms). Why? You have 30 more cubic inches of air moving through the motor.

The LS2 in my GTO weighs about 440lbs. So (all things being equal) that 's 110lbs per set of 2 cylinders in a pushrod motor. So what are we talking about in the Bimmer. Maybe 100lbs? I'll take the turbo six thank you. The difference in overall output will more than make up for the measly 100lbs.

I'm sure if you had to do a blind test in BMW A and BMW B you would absolutely not notice 100 lbs or hundredth of a second difference on the street if the engines were the same.

Turbo 4 vs. Turbo 6, night and day.

andrewgto

Comments on BMW bringing aero kit for the 1-series to Geneva, tii variant rumored

you can keep the 4 cyl. that BMW turbo inline 6 is so smooth and so powerful. People harp on the need for the latest safety reqs bringing up the weight but thats BS.

Evos and WRXs manage to get more room out of a lighter car, I think the real prob is that these latest German interior materials and design avoirdupois the marketing dept insists upon means they cant make a nice clean minimal design anymore. Maybe in a decade when oil is well past 100 a barrel and the cost of plastic itself goes through the roof we will finally see some lightweight yet high-quality interiors, and a return to a more pure exterior aesthetic.

That thinking needs to extend to the car itself. Theres no reason a BMW cant feel of typical Germanic quality but have a more Evo/Elise sort of purity and lightness to its thinking. Theres just too much S**T crammed into every last space in the 1 series. That said I will probably replace my 03 WRX with an 07 STI, I prefer that lighter weight feel, even at the expense of perceived "quality."

JZeke

Comments on BMW bringing aero kit for the 1-series to Geneva, tii variant rumored

Drool.

Those who haven't driven a 1-Series, please don't write this car off and never take the time to drive one.
