Lexus showed up in Chicago with two special edition cars from a different time in a different state. Lexus has been making limited edition vehicles for the Pebble Beach glitterati since 2003, which up to now has always been a Lexus SC 430 unveiled at the concours' Vogue fashion show. This year marks the first time the line has expanded beyond the hardtop coupe, and the RX 350 gets its chance to try on a swanky paint job and some of them there special features. In case you're wondering what color that is, it's Truffle Mica -- but it comes in two others, in case speckly fungus isn't exactly your flavor. Buyers will even get to choose from three packages that come with the special edition -- which would make them even more special. But we won't spoil the surprise -- the full press release is after the jump, and check out the gallery of hi-res photos below.

Lexus Introduces Pebble Beach® Collection RX 350 and ES 350 at Chicago Auto Show
Luxury utility vehicle and luxury sedan receive exclusive package for the first time

February 6, 2008 – Torrance, CA - Lexus today introduced the Lexus Pebble Beach Collection of vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show. The RX 350 luxury utility vehicle and ES 350 luxury sedan will receive Pebble Beach Edition packages for the first time, extending a relationship with Pebble Beach Company that began in 2003 and has since produced an SC 430 Pebble Beach special edition luxury hardtop convertible every year.

The goal of the Pebble Beach Collection is to evoke the feeling of exclusivity that comes with an excursion to the Pebble Beach Resorts. Both the RX and ES Pebble Beach Editions will feature signature colors, popular options and unique badging. Additionally, Pebble Beach Edition owners will have the opportunity to customize their ownership experience by selecting from one of three distinctive merchandise packages: Callaway Golf Experience, Travel Package or Epicurean Encounter.

Production of the Pebble Beach Collection RX and ES is limited to 6,000 vehicles each and will be available beginning in mid-February for the RX and mid-March for the ES models. In addition, a sixth version of the successful SC 430 Pebble Beach Edition model will be introduced this summer. To culminate the collection, an LS 600h L Pebble Beach Edition will debut this fall and will include a luxury travel experience to the world-famous Pebble Beach Resorts.

The RX 350 Pebble Beach Edition is offered in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive and marks the first Lexus special edition model built in North America at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada. The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the RX Pebble Beach Edition package is $3,880. The base MSRP of the front-wheel drive RX 350 is $37,500 and $38,900 for the all-wheel drive model.

Great, now lexus can pull a 'mustang' and completely over expose their marketing ploys.

      Otherwise, snooze-fest.

So disgustingly long in the tooth, I can't believe people buy these things, the interiors are nothing special, and the look is so, old.

Why the hell is Lexus associated with something as exclusive and NON-Japanese as the Pebble Beach Concours De' Elegance to begin with??!

The RX350 is easily Toyota's most successful top-end vehicle and, frankly, it's also quite well executed. It is not, however, for anybody interested in driving. I have driven a few over the years and was sorely disappointed when I test drove one when we bought our last crossover - while it has a manual-shift option, the shifter is so far forward that it was nowhere near where my hand would naturally fall.

Perhaps it was just me and the gods were telling me that I really shouldn't be expecting a Lexus to cater to my delusions of interest in performance. Perhaps, I concluded, they were really exhorting me to look elsewhere. I went with that last thought.

Nice vehicle though and nicely balances the needs of not really looking out of place doing anything the typical upscale family does: from shopping and soccer games to the country club and the theatre. Just don't expect it to cater to any more visceral interests - but few of its buyers are really interested in that. Buick once well understood that demographic and is beginning to once again.
