Baby Caddys could go by the name 'ATS'

The Australian website GoAuto figured that if Bob Lutz wouldn't give up the name of the proposed small Cadillac, it would coin it. So the new Caddy could be known as the "ATS." It's certainly anonymous, but not any more contrived than the rest of the alphabet soup that makes up Cadillac's naming structure.
Regardless, Lutz told the Aussie web-pub that the ATS, "... is, or would be, about the size of a BMW 1-series – maybe a tiny bit bigger to enable larger wheels." Sounds good to us, but the on-again, off-again proposal of rear-wheel drive cars coming out of the General causes us to remain skeptical. If it does come to fruition, it will be built atop the Alpha platform with the help of Holden.

What's the word on the 3-series/G35 a competitor? 'Cause the CTS isn't it.

If it is going to size in at the 1 Series size, couldn't they put it on the Kappa platform? That's the one rwd platform that doesn't seem to be in any danger and it sizes right in with the baby bimmer.

ATS is the name of a large rim producer (they supply the DTM with rims) pretty sure Caddy would run into nameright problems with a ATS nameplate?

It's typical of GM to not be forthcomming with ANY information that is reliable. GM management is in a situation where even they don't know what is comming or going. Since "Putz" seems to change his mind and his story about daily, nobody knows if any of the new design cars will make it to production. This thing with RWD/AWD/FWD/TURBO-6'S/LARGE/SMALL/CANCELLED V-8's Diesels, Volts, and just about anything else we see is like a gorilla in the mist, or the Loc Ness thing people say is there, but nobody seems to really know. God I wish he would get his poop in a pile.

Why would GM want to go "down market" with it's Cadillac brand when there are plenty of near luxury choices in it's other products?
GM should concentrate on delivering on it's promise of a CTS coupe before looking to compete with the BMW 1 series.

because an entry level rwd car will build a younger base which is desirable when your current geriatric clientel is about to die. lexus is suffering from this problem. bmw's biggest seller is the 3. there are countless reasons for a kappa platform'd sedan. it may be the only way i would consider moving from a g35 6mt sedan to a cadillac.

They shouldn't even do this. They'll have the RWD BLS on the Alpha platform and that should be as small as they go. Let Saab take care of the 1-series competitor with the upcoming 9-1.

Small cars > large cars for driving dynamics. A CTS is too big. I'm happy to see Cadillac build something like this.

The article mentions that this "ATS" is a BLS replacement, not in addition to the BLS. This will be the 1/3 series fighter, which makes sense since the new 1-series is really just a 3-series before 3-series bloat got out of control.

Hasty generalization, Ad Hominum, no references (is a link hard to find?). Looks like fun, I'll try!
GM is making a real turnaround here! They are making sweeping changes that are replacing bad products with great ones right on time with their schedule. They really have their stuff together. The imports with their ricers are quaking in their boots about now! (well, I didn't quite get an Ad Hominum in there, but whatev.)
