Confused Chevy HHR thinks it's a Mercedes

click above for more pics of the Chevy HHR: Mercedes-Benz Edition
If I were a Chevy HHR, I wouldn't want to be me either. Spotted by an Autoblog reader in Anaheim, California, this Heritage High Roof is sporting all manner of Mercedes badging, from the big three-pointed star on the grill, to the center caps on the wheels and the steering wheel. Dubbed an LS 500 4 Matic if the badging out back is to be believed, it has traded in its Motown roots for a purer pedigree that traces a line directly back to Mercedes-Benz HQ in Stuttgart, Germany. GM engineers did tune the HHR SS Turbo on the Nurburgring, but we don't think this is the type of German engineering with which they were looking to associate Chevy's little people mover. Thanks for the pics, Oli!

It looks better as a Mercedes.

Mr. Neff can you please explain this statement? What exactly is wrong with the HHR? Being Affordable? Decent fun quotient? More than enough cargo capability?

It is ugly and a PT rip off.
AlexP 4:10PM (1/24/2008)
Is it, really? I only dislike its interior materials and it's grille, which CAN be improved somewhat easily.

there's no place for my surf board, it looks like a turd wagon that has less style then an AMC Pacer and up close, it looks like WalMart quality outside and inside.
checked out one in the lot 2 days ago. chevy made better quality in the 80's then this load.

yeah Menice, you an really get a turdboard in your Tiburon, unless thats just wishful thinking on your part.
Actually you can get two boards on an HHR with a luggage rack.
Yes, the interior is inundated with hard plastic but nothing else could match both the functionality, features, and performance for near the price.
The HHR looks exactly like the suburban its modeled after and that predates the PT by 50 yrs so lose the PT wannabe arguement. More features and power than the Xb/Xd. And performance to beat them both. The PT drives like a boat on stilts, including the GT. The GT may win the straightline but cant approach the cornering ability or rear storage with the seats up.

you know your the first person to get it right? and its leaps and bounds ahead of the quality in the HHR. my surfboard comment was a joke... wish i could surf though.
but anyway the HHR was designed by the same designer of the PT after he left....the 'look like' comments can never go away...... and was modeled after the '49 suburban...too bad they missed the boat, that had class and style.
"Yes, the interior is inundated with hard plastic but nothing else could match both the functionality, features, and performance for near the price."
great, that much i'll give it, (the exterior looks cheap too)but that does not cut it to be a competitive car company..
esp. when the PT was a more appealing choice... and i hate chrysler.

This is too funny. At least he was very thorough in his rebadging sham. Wonder what this cat's story line? I remember the Hyundai badged Bentley, turns owner the owner was a Hyundai dealership.
Hey, it may turn out to be more reliable than as actual Mercedes.

That is good and terrible. Not the first Benz badge I've seen on a Chevy, though. It's always worth a good laugh.

I missed the pics in the gallery of this car being keyed and/or hit by another car. Show me those pics, please.

Interior aside, it would make a good Mercedes (design wise).
I mean, look at it. o_O

There's a 300C in my town that is replaced with Bentley badges, as well as another 300C with a Rolls Phantom front grille. I'll have to send in some pics the next time I spot them. You should see the guy who drives the "Bentley". Total douche.

Smarter than spending $300,000 on a car.
TwinTurbo3000GT 4:34PM (1/24/2008)
lol. you would have to be a douche rebadge any car IMO, but at least the 300 LOOKS the part (if only on the outside).
James 4:36PM (1/24/2008)
smart? sure. I completely agree. so you're telling me you'd do it to save $260k. how much is the embarrassment worth to you?
I'm just saying it goes against all unwritten rules of driving a vehicle. then again, it's what keeps laughters alive and well when they get posted to sites like Autoblog.
Brent 5:21PM (1/24/2008)
I would de-badge a car, and save $260,000. :)
