I think Honda has it in them to make a really competitive Tier 1 luxury sedan, but for some reason Acura hasn't really correctly targeted the audience.
The got a little too obsessed with putting high-tech advancements in the cars, which is good because luxury buyers want cutting edge stuff, but they focused on the stuff luxury buyers don't care about, lol. SH-AWD is nice for handling, but the RL is supposed to be the top of the line large car for Acura, and in that segment people care more about super cushy silence and comfort (like the LS) and not really about how fast you can take a corner in the car.
And the same thing applies to the interiors...they look nice and high tech and sporty, but that's not really the right look for a car that's supposed to be the pinnacle of luxury for your luxury brand.
On the bright side it's easier to fix these issues than if their cars were mechanically flawed, so hopefully they'll manage to up the luxury ante of their cabins and redesign the cars to look more like their competitors.
If they pull what Lexus originally pulled when launching the LS400, they should be able to catch up in no time. Just build a car that's basically an Acura version of the LS460/S550, and price it $20K below everyone else while not missing a single feature and it'll catch on like wildfire.
