Tuner Tuesdays: Edo Competition tinkers with the Audi R8

There are lots of Porsche tuners out there tinkering with 911s, but it takes a special kind of company to work up the nerve to let loose on a six- or seven-figure supercar. Edo Competition manages to do it repeatedly, and after squeezing more juice out of already high-strung exotics like the Maserati MC12, Ferrari 599 GTB and Porsche Carrera GT, the German tuner has turned its attention to the Audi R8.
By fitting a freer-flowing, lightweight exhaust system, Edo has managed to coax an extra 22 horses out of the stable, boosting output from the 4.2-liter FSI V8 to 442hp while trimming 18 lbs off the car's weight in the process. Buyers can specify a loud exhaust or a really loud exhaust, along with their choice of 19 or 20 inch forged rims. Edo has also crafted a set of carbon fiber aero bits, including a front chin spoiler, rear diffuser and – this is the best part – an eight-piece set of inserts for the rear bumper.
The result? Running to 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill is cut by 0.2 of a second, down to 4.5 from the standard 4.7 seconds. Sure, that isn't a dramatic increase in performance, but it'll probably make you smile a little wider when you pull away from that tricked-out 911 at the light.

This kit is too understated.
Where's the crazy wing, the moronic side skirt wings and lunatic front scoops front bumper?

after the R888 or even the new diesel version this is pretty lame.

Looks pretty decent, but have rivets ever looked good on any wheel in history? I'm not sure they have.

"but it'll probably make you smile a little wider when you pull away from that tricked-out 911 at the light."
... but the weakest cheapest 911 already has no problems pulling away from the R8 from a stop... i'm confused.

Hm, not that I've ever driven either, but for 0-100km/h the 911 Carrera is rated at 5sec, the Carrera S at 4.8sec, the Carrera 4 at 5.1sec, the Carrera 4S at 4.9sec. All the convertibles and Targas are even slower, of course, while The R8 does it in 4.6sec. The Turbos and GTs are the only ones, that are rated below 4.6sec. So you must have gotten something wrong there.
Then again, none of those would stand a chance against my Skoda Fabia TDI wagon, so why even bother... ;).

Why do tuners even bother changing out the rims from the sotck R8? They are the best looking rims on the road today, and fit the car perfectly!
@zamafir... *sigh*

I know that this is going to make me unpopular, but does anybody else think that the R8 looks awkward from certain angles? I used to think that it was beautiful until I say one in person. The proportions just seem off when viewed from the side.

I need to get this off my chest: I can't understand the praise that is being heaped on this car. I know it's by all accounts a very good car, but say it with me: The-Audi-R8-looks-like-a-badly-designed-toy. It's god-damn ugly!
I can't even begin to tell you how utterly sick I am of all the Porsches you see on the street every single day, but I'd still take one over the R8. Ubiquitous beats ugly. Well, apart from the Boxter. That's ubiquitous AND ugly.
Whew! Now that I've vented a bit, please return to loving the oh-so-wonderful R8.

@Paul J.: I've got to respectfully disagree. I think it looks gorgeous, and uses flowing lines to emphasize an elegant, sweeping, and most-of-all unique style.
On the other hand, I think the 911 looks like a floppy tit and sounds like a nervous RC car.
@Autoblog: Where are pics of the engine, or an underside shot of the exhaust piping? Too bad they didn't make more substantial improvements on the car....
