Detroit 2008: The rest of the story on the Lexus LF-A Roadster Concept

We were left hanging yesterday with a ton of pictures of Lexus' brand new LF-A Roadster Concept, but no information to go along with them. Now Lexus has filled us in by releasing information and rather vague specifications on the car, although it's nothing we wouldn't have guessed. The LF-A Roadster is essentially based on its coupe brother that first made its debut back in 2005 in Detroit. A revised version was also shown in Detroit last year. Power comes from a V10 under 5.0 liters with something north of 500 horsepower, and shifting is done via a sequential transmission with paddle shifters. A significant change to the Roadster version, besides not having a fixed roof, is the retractable rear wing that adjusts according to the vehicle's speed.
By continuing with the LF-A series, we can only hope that this means Lexus is still planning on making a production version. The only thing left to choose would be if you'd rather have the coupe or the roadster. Viewing the beautiful live shots in the gallery below might just help you make up your mind. You can also follow the jump to view the official press release.

PRESS RELEASE:
January 13, 2008 - Detroit, MI - The engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A premium sports car concept as a medium for expressing their ideas about what a high-performance sporting vehicle not only can be, but should be. In this latest expression of the LF-A, they have removed the car's top to create a high-performance roadster.
The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure's strength and rigidity even without a top.
Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster is powered by a high-revving V10 engine that approaches 5.0 liters in displacement. The V10, capable of more than 500 horsepower and test-track speeds greater than 200 mph, is mounted in front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what the LF-A's engineers refer to as a "front-mid" configuration.
The engine is connected via a torque tube and propeller shaft to a transaxle that is controlled by paddle shifters. The torque tube is a structural member that adds rigidity to the drivetrain and chassis while also reducing vibration.
Styling is rooted in the Lexus L-Finesse design philosophy, conferring the LF-A Roadster's front end with a compact, low-profile, aerodynamic shape. Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster stands just 48 inches tall, but the Roadster configuration adds a speed adaptive rear wing.
The rear is marked by a pair of wrap-around, arrowhead-shaped taillights that bracket a pair of large grilles. These grilles vent the heated air from the car's two rear-mounted radiators into the LF-A Roadster's aerodynamic wake. The radiators are fed cool air by two large intake ducts mounted just above the rear wheel wells. This aft radiator positioning not only allowed the designers to keep the car's front profile low and tight but also aided the LF-A's chassis engineers in their search for optimal weight distribution.
Helping to provide balance and scale to the design, which features an overall length of 175.6 inches and a wheelbase of 102.6 inches, are high-performance tires on turbine-styled alloy wheels. The front tires are 265/35R20s, while the rears are 305/30R20s. Like the LF-A coupe, the brakes consist of 14.2-inch cross-drilled, vented discs up front, and 13.6-inch cross-drilled, vented discs at the rear. The front brake calipers are six-piston units and the rear calipers use four pistons each.
An "F" logo, located on each front fender of the Roadster, indicates the vehicle's status as a part of the new "F" marque. The name is derived from the original "F" designation for the first Lexus LS prototype. That vehicle was internally coded "Circle-F," with the "F" standing for "flagship." The Circle-F designation further evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept developed into Lexus' first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the "F" code has come to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development process. In addition, Fuji Speedway is the IS F's home circuit, and the shape of the F-logo was inspired by many of the track's turns. The all-new Lexus IS F sport sedan is the first production vehicle to carry the F marque.

At first, they made the front end too bland. Then, they made it too busy. This one seems to get everything just right.

Uhm... if I didn't know any better, I'd say that was an S2000 with a new kit and paint job. Why couldn't they have thrown into production that car from Minority Report? That concept at least was fresh and not so derivative.

And this is going to be both economical and affordable? HA!

I almost thought this was a Honda S2000 until i had a closer look at the front end.
500HP V10? Come on now I know they can squeeze a hell of a lot more than that from a V10. It's sort of like having a car with a 200HP V8.

tanooki2003: 500 hp from a not-quite-5-liter V8 is a bit over the 100hp-per-liter mark, which is excellent output for that size engine. If the Dodge Viper's 8.2-liter V10 were that power-efficient, it'd be producing 820 hp from the factory!

BMW has no problem pulling 100hp/l from their V10, Audi and BMW no problem pulling 100hp/l from their V8s, and the list goes on. I still dont care for the 'mee too' heavy handed 350z influence in this car, or the GT layout in general, but heck, if the IS F came in at 56,000 to make people seriously consider it regardless of power maybe this one will undercut the competition by coming in around the GTR's price tag as well.

Do you think they could manage to add a few more air ducts on the vehicle? I count eight. Two in the lower spoiler, two in front of the rear wheels, two above the rear wheels and two on the back of the vehicle. Did I miss any? It's like they looked at every detail of the F430 and said, that looks nice, lets incoporate that into our coupe.
I wonder if they're actually going to produce this vehicle with the new CAFE standards coming and Toyota's "green" image taking yet another hit by offering a 500 hp 2 person vehicle. FYI, I'm no greenie, I own a 400 hp 2 person vehicle, I'm just making a comment about the image Toyota has worked hard to create.

I'm sure the Engine is off the Chain, but I'm still not getting the Design on this. For me it's a little to over the top.

Beautiful. Is i just me, or does the front end look like a 1992-2000 SC Coupe?

Yes the front end looks somewhat S2000ish...that said, I like the S2000's front end, and this thing has one of the most original tail ends I've ever seen on any any sports car in the last decade. Maybe takes a little inspiration from Toyota's own MR-S or MR-2, but even then it's vastly original.
Too bad those front headlamps are totally impractical and will never make it to production.
But honestly the funniest thing on this car is the snow mode, lol. As if I'm going to buy the Lexus supercar and go drive it in the snow, lol.
