The chosen chariot for the new Volkswagen Racing Cup is a Jetta sporting a 1.4-liter supercharged and turbocharged TSI producing 226 hp, the same mill that won the Best New Engine of 2006 at the International Engine of the Year Awards. Power is sent though a six-speed manual gearbox to a limited slip differential and on down to 18-inch BBS wheels fitted with 225/40 Hankook tires. Exhaust gases are expelled through a race-spec unit, while slowing the 2,690-pound racer is done through a set of 360mm vented discs with 12-pot calipers.

It's a very trick setup that we can't wait to see campaigned during the 2008 season, so expect some reports from the grid later this year. Make the jump for the official press release.

VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TSI RACER MAKES DEBUT AT AUTOSPORT SHOW

Volkswagen's latest track challenger, a supercharged and turbocharged Jetta saloon, was unveiled today (Thursday) in Britain.

The Jetta TSI Sport made its debut at the Autosport International racing car show at Birmingham's NEC, taking centre stage on the British Racing and Sports Car Club stand. The new machine will take to the track for the first time on Easter Monday (24 March) in the opening round of the Hankook-backed Volkswagen Racing Cup, at Oulton Park.

In road-going form the Jetta's 1.4-litre, 16-valve engine produces 170 PS but the engineers at Volkswagen Racing UK, with the help of their technology partners at Superchips, Milltek Sport and Turbo Dynamics, have boosted this to 230 PS.

The TSI power unit was proven in competition last season under the bonnet of a Golf; Volkswagen Racing UK's Melissa Wright believes that the Jetta TSI is a potential race winner: 'We learned a lot about the engine during the course of 2007 and we have incorporated that knowledge into the new installation,' she said. 'In the right hands and with some development mileage under it, the new car will be a front-runner, I am sure.'

The TSI features an engine-driven supercharger and an exhaust gas powered turbocharger, arranged in series; the supercharger operates at lower engine speeds and the turbo cuts in as revs rise. The result is excellent driveability and performance throughout the rev range, with no turbo lag and high maximum torque. The power unit was named Best New Engine of 2006 in the International Engine of the Year Awards.

It's not only in Britain that the Jetta will be cutting a dash this season – the Sports Car Club of America is to stage a championship for turbodiesel-powered machines. The Jetta TDI Cup will launch in May.

In the UK, the Jetta TSI Sport will be raced by selected motoring and motor sport journalists. The Volkswagen Racing Cup expands to 14 rounds this year and will once again be the chief saloon-race support to the British Formula 3 and British GT Championships.

The Volkswagen Racing Cup in association with Hankook is further supported by Augustus Martin, Castrol, ECM Vehicle Delivery, Milltek Sport, Mondial Assistance, KW Automotive, Superchips, TNT Logistics, Turbo Dynamics, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Volkswagen Financial Services UK.

      But its a Jetta. The chick's car. As a "racer"? A Jetta? I'm not sure I read the article right, but THE ubiquitous girl car, in which in my 38 years on this Earth I can count the brave males willing to be seen driving this thing on one hand, is dressed up as a sports car?

        Well, this is all talking about the 1.4L engine, which only exists in gasoline form. I think this is also sometimes called a TFSI engine. In the diesel realm, TDI = Turbocharged Direct Injection. TFSI in this case equals Twincharged Fuel Stratified Injection. FSI is direct injection for gasoline, and this engine has both a turbo and a supercharger.

        There's basically no way you're going to get 226 horsepower out of a 1.4L diesel. For the upcoming U.S. Jetta TDI, they're bumping the engine to 2.0L and the output is going from 105 to 140 hp (helped along from the switch from unit injectors to common-rail injectors).

        There's a brief mention in the press release of the SCCA starting a TDI race series, but the bulk of it is talking about the gasoline engine.

        Thanks Zach. Yeah, I've tended to glom those two together. My confusion was made worse a while ago because I was sure that VW was also working on a TSI engine with a variable-vane turbo or twin turbos instead of the turbo+super arrangement. Too many 'T's and 'I's... Well, maybe they should have gone for STSI or something...

        Mulad, you are incorrect. TFSI stands refers to the TURBOcharged FSI engine that is used in the A3, A4, Passat, GTI/GLI, etc. TSI refers to the twincharged engine that is sold only in Europe for now. Two completely different engines.

        I think the article is simply confused TSI with TDI. The TFSI engine has nothing to do with this story.

      On the VW site I saw something about VW about looking for Drivers in their TDI races in the US. Maybe that is what you guys are talking about.

      I remember reading about this engine a while ago. Even though I promised to never buy a vw again, I would if they brought the Polo over and stuck this engine in it. It could be called R14.

      ya the article is swapping out TDI for TSI ;)

      Correct, the TSI is twin charged gasoline direct injection engine with a turbocharger plus supercharger. It is only offered overseas seen in the Golf, Jetta and Touran.

      We (U.S) have the TDI and will see the SCCA Jetta TDI Cup.

      "TSI technology in detail:

      The most effective means for reducing fuel consumption is so-called “downsizing”. By reducing displacement and thereby lowering frictional losses, a lower specific fuel consumption can be achieved, and this goes hand in hand with better efficiency. The innovative path to the future is the combination of supercharger and turbocharger. The supercharger compensates for typical drive-off weakness at low revs of purely turbocharged gasoline engines, while the turbocharger really puts out at higher revs. This combination of two types of chargers is unique among engines mass-produced worldwide.

      Supercharger generates torque at low end:

      The engine developers chose to boost torque at the low end by introducing a belt-driven supercharger. This is a charger based on the Roots principle. A special aspect of the special supercharger that is used is its internal gearing stage ahead of the synchronization gear pair; this layout produces a high supercharging power boost at even low engine speeds.

      Turbocharger kicks in at the top end:

      At higher engine speeds the exhaust gas driven turbocharger (with wastegate control) also kicks in. The supercharger and turbo­charger are connected in series. The supercharger is actuated by a magnetic clutch that is integrated in a module within the water pump. A control door ensures that the fresh air requirements for the operating point are met in supplying the turbocharger or supercharger. In pure turbocharger operation the control door is open. The air then takes the familiar path of conventional turbocharged engines via the front air cooler and throttle valve to the induction pipe.

      One of the greatest challenges in development was to determine the best possible configuration of interactions between these two chargers that are arranged in series. That is because the powertrain only achieves a uniform torque curve if the supercharger and exhaust gas turbocharger complement one another optimally. And indeed over a very wide range of engine speeds and with efficiency gains never achieved before.

      Combination of supercharger and turbocharger is what makes it happen:

      The maximum charge pressure of the twin charger is approx. 2.5 bar at 1,500 rpm. The supercharger is only needed to generate the required boost pressure in the speed range up to 2,400 rpm. The exhaust gas turbocharger is designed to provide an optimal level of efficiency at the upper end of performance and to provide sufficient boost pressure in the middle speed range. However the turbocharger alone is insufficient to achieve prescribed elasticity objectives during dynamic driving in the lower rpm range. The TSI solves this problem as the only engine in the world that utilizes a supercharger. The results: A spontaneous build-up of boost pressure. The turbo hole is eliminated by having these two systems complement one another. When the supercharger is no longer needed, at the latest when a speed of 3,500 rpm is reached, the exhaust gas turbocharger maintains the desired boost pressure in all driving situations, including dynamic transitions from overrun to full load."

        I absolutely love twincharger technology.

        All the benefits of either form of FI, with none of the disadvantages.

        BTW, VW isn't the only company to use a twincharger. The Lancia Delta S4 back in the '80s had one. And I hope other companies follow VW's lead and introduce a twincharger. Anyone else want to see the next Cadillac STS feature a twincharged V6?
