Sure, the upfront costs are competitive, but if you are buying and not leasing, then think twice about the Altima because of its CVT, which will cost you more to maintain than a regular automatic transmission. Sure, the CVT saves you at the pump, so you can pay it to the mechanic when it comes time to change the transmission fluid.

Matt W.

Comments on Consumer Reports names Nissan Altima top mid-size sedan

Is a CVT really less reliable than a conventional AT? It has far fewer moving parts and, if something does go wrong, it's a much easier fix than the gears-and-valves bonanza that a modern 6AT is.

I mean, take poor care of either and you're looking at a huge bill, but as the victim of a malfunctioning transmission, I'll take the easier-to-service design any day of the week.

psarhjinian

Comments on Consumer Reports names Nissan Altima top mid-size sedan

Matt, I agree that the lifetime costs of an Altima are likely to be greater than those of an Accord, but for a different reason. Based on prices of used Altimas and Accords, I see that the Altima depreciates faster than the Accord. Thus, if you buy a 2008 Altima and a 2008 Accord, chances are the Altima will lose a higher percentage of its new-car value than the Accord will.

1337

Comments on Consumer Reports names Nissan Altima top mid-size sedan

FWIW, Edmunds' TCO tool predicts total maintenance costs for the first 75,000 miles at $4,100 for the V6 Accord, $3,300 for the V6 Altima.

The only category in which they give a meaningful cost advantage to the Accord is insurance.

Dan

Comments on Consumer Reports names Nissan Altima top mid-size sedan

Hey, why not test drive a Malibu against the others.
