I am struck by the fact that the interior does not have the god-awful symmetric setup that has been so popular with automakers recently. If this presages the future direction of interior design, then I am all for it.

It's actually the past of automotive interior design. One of Saab's signatures has been the "seven-shaped" dash, as you see there on the 9-4x. It's excellent, when it's not made of cheap POS parts.
