Toyota passes Ford as second largest automaker in the U.S.; Mazda grows the most in 2007
The final sales numbers for 2007 are in, and to be honest, they're better than we expected. Of the 34 brands we track sales, 19 showed an improvement in their daily average sales rate last year. The majority of those that didn't, we're sad to say, are either domestic U.S. brands or brands that are owned by a domestic U.S. automaker.
Big ups to Mazda, though, which won our coveted Biggest Winner of the Year honor by growing its daily average sales rate 9.8% and selling nearly 300,000 vehicles. We can't say we're surprised that Jaguar is our Biggest Loser of the Year after posting daily average sales rate that fell 24.4% last year. We'd also like to call out Jeep for posting a 3.0% improvement thanks to the hot-selling Wrangler Unlimited, as well as Lincoln, which, despite all odds, increased its daily average sales rate by 8.8% and sold an additional 11,000 vehicles last year. There are other plenty of other proud automakers in the list below we don't have room (or time) to mention.
Of course, the biggest news in auto sales for 2007 is that Ford Motor Company was supplanted by Toyota Motor Company as the second largest automaker in the U.S. Toyota sold 2,620,825 units in 2007 compared to Ford's 2,572,599. We weren't all that impressed with ToMoCo's final tally of a 2.7% daily average sales rate increase, but that's all it needed after Ford posted a 12.7% decrease. General Motors, of course, is still well ahead of both with 3,866,620 units sold, while Chrysler could be breathing down Ford's neck with 2,076,650 sales if we expected that number would increase in 2008, which we don't.
Note that there were 307 selling days last year compared to 306 selling days in 2006, so the figures below represent the change in daily average sales rate (average number of vehicles sold per day) and not the change in raw number of units sold.

Even with the new Impreza, Subaru continues it's downward spiral of decreasing sales.

Hooray for Mazda. They are a prime example of giving people vehicles that are attractive, well-designed and fun to drive and how that drives growth. The momentum should continue with the new 6 that takes the solid basics of that model and polishes them to a more competitive sheen. Things will get even better when they bring out an updated RX. It'd also be nice if they had a lower end sporty coupe and a mini-SUV that wasn't a rebadged mediocre Escape. It seems Mazda provides the Zoom Zoom to Ford products but gets Zilch Zilch in return.

To zerk - Impreza just rolled on to dealership a month or so a go. It could hardly reflex any moves positively or other wise. :P
And new models will be coming in the coming months. I will predict that 08 will be a much better year them than 07.

Maybe if Ford actually offered some of their cool Euro designed cars here in the states their sales wouldn't be down almost 14%. Just a thought.

Congrats to Mazda!!!
They definitely have a great lineup of cars right now. After several years of racking up awards, their revamped lineup is finally paying some dividends in terms of sales in the US.
The new Mazda6 looks sweet as well. Add in a true rx-7 successor and things will be looking really good for them.
Also, add Mazda sales to Ford and Ford is still number 2 overall, although it's sad how slow the turnaround at Ford has been. GM has already made Cadillac and Saturn very competitive brands. The new Malibu has been received very well.. much better than the Fusion.

Agree--the Fusion was let down by mediocre details, especially the interior. I don't know what Ford is smoking, because they can't build interiors with any sense of style or grace. They all have the same ugly already dated switchgear and details.

Yeah, The Malibu is better than the Fusion.
Thats why the Malibu sold more its first month than the fusion did.

"The new Mazda6 looks sweet as well."
Not impressed with the 6. Last ice-storm, my LS got crunched [not totalled :(] by a rather large branch. Currently driving a 6 as a rental. Its nimble, that's it. Riding in this thing feels as if I'm sitting in a sub-woofer. My '96 626 was more civil.
This is the boomiest three box cabin I have ever sat in. On a less than perfect surface, all hell breaks loose. The stereo can't even drown the booming road-noise out.
This has dampened my spirits about the down stream 3. That being a 2 box cabin, and a lower level car doesn't bode well with me.

in reply to mr. oak
That's why Mazda needs the NEW 6 especially for american markets that need cushy rides in the midsize sedan segment (the europeans love the old 6 btw, sells well and has won countless awards).
Most of the noise discomfort you are referring to is probably due to the aggressive tires.
Michael 8:04PM (1/03/2008)
So the two biggest losers are Jag and Buick. Jag's performance doesn't surprise me, but man Buick's does. I mean this is an American classic name! I would hate to see Buick go bye-bye like Olds did. But the reality is that there is nothing that Buick offers that I really like, except the Lucerne, but I don't need a car that big.
They need a thorough overhauling over at Buick. Make the cars competitive with Mercurys, Volvos, and even VW (Jetta, Passat). Maybe they should build a big body, rwd car, kind of like the G8, watch the fleet sales grow with police orders/ taxis. Maybe ressurect some of the old names. Don't let Buick die GM!
Reply
Xcountryflyer 8:21PM (1/03/2008)
Buick is saddled with some pretty blah cars other than the Enclave. They need to update the Lucerne and LaCrosse sooner than later. Neither of those vehicles offers a 5 or 6 speed auto in any configuration. That says everything about their abilities.
John R 7:04AM (1/04/2008)
There also a stigma issue. Most young people don't want to drive an old person's car and older people don't want to drive an old person's car either.
I apologize if I sound harsh, but how many times have you been in the left lane of the interstate and had to slow down nearly 5 mph under the speed limit for a sleepwalking pensioner in a Park Avenue?
Now if we could get those Chinese Buicks...
