Top Gear drives Germany's three small super saloons... well, in the M3's case, it's a coupe, but you get the picture The cars go against each other, as well as Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus F1 racer that won the 1972 World Championship, and has the same horsepower as the sedans. There's also the Stig, a Stig-ette in a white bikini and helmet, Clarkson dining on an apple run over at the apex of a turn, a measurement device that we can't mention here, and lots of unkind things said of M3 drivers. But it's just in time for Christmas, and it's in three parts, which means you can make Top Gear Christmas cheer can last all day. Especially if you have a new M3 on order.

I think that was one of the most enjoyable car comparisons I have witnessed. Merry Chirstmas/Happy Holidays everyone.

Yeah, there's no comparing the SRT-8 or the CTS-V to the M3. The M3 out-runs, out-handles, out-performs, most importantly, out-classes both of those cars. The Vette might be on par performance wise, but I'd take the more subtle penis car over the hillbilly penis car any day.

You are wrong if you really think the m3 can out run any srt8, vette or cts-v, and as far as I'm concerned, the m3 only outclasses the dodges.

        above was to T.
Andrew c'mon this guy is seriously comparing Dodge to BMW.
        You need to check... something.

My 56 year old mother owns a CTS-V. I've driven it a dozen times. I daily a BMW E46 non-M3. The BMW has a much cleaner interior design, much more functional. The the radio/hvac/nav with subsequent controls are realy gaudy on the CTS, all oversized. I ALWAYS hit the volume wheel whenever I turned the steering wheel, it's at 2-3 o'clock, where I pull on hard turns. Don't get me wrong, the CTS is a decent car, but it's no M3 (even if it outsourced some design to BMW). Let's not to mention the exterior. The CTS has wayward lines every which direction that I suppose suit a 56 year old woman. The BMW's lines are much more clean, yet still inspiring. I suppose it all comes down to opinion, but in my eyes the M3 is leagues ahead of the SRT and the CTS.

I never said the M3 could out perform the Vette. In fact, I showed proof that the old one could not. But with the new engine, differential, and suspension setup, maybe it could, we'll see.

I really want that Z shirt that Clarkson is wearing.
Super great cars for sure, but I think I would be happier in a srt8, vette or cts-v.

        lmao

        c5 vettes ruin e46 m3s
c5 zo6 is on par with CSL

'08 z51 vette is deff faster than e90 m3. that is not going to be particularly close

its not fair to compare saloon GTs and ground up 2 seat sports cars espically when the sports car has the better engine, handling and weighs hundreds of pounds less

m3 is the best at what it is

        @Andrew

BMW always performe realy bad at topgear. TopGear is the only magazine which tested a Audi S4 (B6) faster as a E46 M3.

To be fair compare the e46 M3 to the C5 not the C6... the e46 M3 was on the way to went out of production as the C6 hit the market. The e46 was in production from 1999-2006... the C5 from 1997-2004 and C6 started in 2005.

        The C5 Z06 was from 2001 the E46 M3 CSL from 2003...

if you compare a Corvette to a M3 take models of the same production time..

The C5 did not stand a chanche vs the e46 M3 on the race track...

Nagma: I'm trying to be unbiased, as I have owned several BMWs. It'd be unfair to say "The M3 outperforms the 'Vette" when I can't prove that it's true. Either way, of course, I'd pick the M3 over the 'Vette any day, I'm just trying to be nice to the poor 'Vette.
If all you care about is straight line speed and nothing else then the corvette would do you well. I personally prefer the whole package. No offense.
i drive a 2005 magnum rt. its a nice car and the srt8 trims are even nicer. but looking at the build quality inside most american cars(including the overhyped plasticmade malibu), i'll pick german anyday
        • 7 Years Ago
In all fairness, Erig, I'm a BMW driver and will still admit the Corvette can take corners. It'd be interesting to see how the Corvette and new M3 stack up against eachother on a track.

As for Top Gear's test track: The 'Vette ran a 1.26.8 around the track while the old M3 ran a 1.31.8. Obviously the old M3 was a smaller displacement inline 6, and we're comparing a 2 seater with a mid-size coupe, but still, quite the difference.

Either way, agreed, I'd take the M3 over the 'Vette any day.

I watched this yesterday. Brilliant viewing you guys. You should all try to see it.

LOL, you gotta love the Stig's girlfriend in the bikini :)

Man I love Top Gear! Wish we could get it here. I have a UK channel via my cable but it's the cheap, dignified, on stage play crap.
It's on BBC America, channel 264 on Direct TV. They are one season behind though.

I'm still trying to find the exact moment that dodge entered the comments posts. I'm not even gonna try to tackle why they exist.
I suggest anyone interested just grab a torrent of the show, it was one of the best of this season (and this season was particularly good).

      Clarkson's my hero.
I really wish they kept going all season. I can assume that a GT-R will be on the show, either in just a regular test, or a race to Moscow with James and Richard running in wooden clogs. Either way, season 11 is going to be crazy. Oh yeah, and they prob will have the Evo X and the STI.

"M3 drivers have no friends." There are just so many quotables.

There is no show, especially about automobiles, that is better than this.

      Audi for life!
