Nissan bringing GT500 GT-R and 16 other cars to Tokyo Auto Salon

Nissan and its motorsports arm, NISMO, will be partnering with its affiliates at Autech to blow out this year's Tokyo Auto Salon with 16 different cars being spread across three show stands.
On display at the Nissan booth will be the Skyline Coupe Aero Sports Concept and a hopped-up version of the X-Trail, dubbed the Extremer Package Concept. The Autech team will be showing off the Dualis Premier Concept along with Rider Performance versions of the Elgrand, Serena and Note. And to top it all off, Nissan will be bringing out the GT500 GT-R, due to start its campaign in SuperGT next year.

Why would Nissan have GT500 in its name if Ford already uses it on the Shelby GT500 Mustang? Isn't that some kind of infringment?

GT500 is the name of the class the GT-R is part of in Japanese Touring car races.

Read the title before you post. Similarly, think before you type. The world would then be a better place.

"... people really dont know real racing do you?"
It's called ALMS and GrandAm--I see you only goto NASCAR races...

Seriously, you guys need to grow up. How about some simple explaination like Justin. No need for name calling or personal attacks.
can't we all just get along?

Yo EJ25RUN: Grand-Am Cup/Koni are dominated by FORD mustang. Ford is also in all the GT/GT2/GT3 european races with Mustangs and V8 Vantage. Get a clue.

I'm pretty sure it's the name of the class that it will race in the the Japan Grand Touring Championship.

Oops, I guess it's known as Super GT now.
The Nissan and the Shelby use the name in the same way but with different intentions. Shelby, because the Mustang is a GT style car with 500 hp, and Nissan because the class has GT style cars limited to 500 hp.

Shelby/Ford certainly don't have the right to claim anything "GT", especially being that they were taken from the Italians.
"Grand Touring" was a word first coined by the Italians and popularized by Enzo Ferrari. e.g. Alfa Romeo Gran Turismo Allegerita, and the first car to use "GT" in a vehicle name being the 1951 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT.
Also, the term "GT-R" (Grand Touring-Racer) was first used by Prince (now part of Nissan) in the late 60s part of their Grand Touring efforts, which was built on the success of the Prince R380. The first GT-R actually had a race engine used in GT race cars; Nissan resurrected the Prince race car in the 90s as the R390 GT-1 which had a decent stint in LeMans.
"GT500" is a series that is part of the Super GT(JGTC). Isn't a marketing moniker for a car, but is really a "GT" event limited to 500hp. There is also a GT300 series which has a power cap of 300hp.

That GT500 GT-R is one sick looking machine. I hope Nissan takes a few styling cues from this when doing the Spec V. In light of their achievements at the 'Ring, I wonder if there'll be an R35 M Spec Nur as well. The GT-R faithful can only hope...

What achievements exactly? Has it won any races Nurbumring races? LOL The "Spec Nur" would not even be street legal since the sum of their achievements consists of running on race tires.
Franz 2:06PM (12/19/2007)
@ Christian:
If you knew anything about the GT-R, you'd know that there was an M Spec Nur version of the R34. At the time the R34 held the record for fastest production car around the 'Ring. Dumb-ass. I wish some of you would just take the time out to at least find out what it is you're trying to rebut, instead of coming here looking like idiots. And learn how to spell. It's "Nurburgring".
Christian 4:31PM (12/19/2007)
Nurbumh*le ring. Better now?
Dude, realize the R34 Ring edition was stupid too. What exactly have they won? NOTHING. The R34 held the (fake) record for like 3 months. So what?
Franz 4:37PM (12/19/2007)
Now your just being plain dumb. Where on earth does it say the R34 M Spec Nur was built to celebrate Nissan winning anything? It was a limited production version built in recognition of the record breaking performance. Not winning anything. And even if it held the record for 3 minutes, 3 months or 3 years, it still broke it, no matter how long it stood. By your logic, records need to stand for longer than 3 months to be valid... wtf? Grow up dude. And quit hating.
