Inside Line drives and loves the 2009 Jaguar XF

The Jaguar XF will soon be upon us, and if we're to believe Inside Line executive editor Michael Jordan's "First Drive" report, this is indeed a good thing. He speaks of an attractive car that's inviting, engaging to drive, and downright fast when you get to the bottom of it. The XF runs to 60 in 5.1 seconds when equipped with the raucous 4.2L supercharged V8. Frankly, it sounds like it's as fun to drive as either the XJR or XKR, but it does its thing in a more modern-looking package than the big XJ and a more practical one than the admittedly breathtaking XK. We won't steal Jordan's thunder by rehashing his review here. Read it in full over at Inside Line. What we can say is that after reading it, we're eager to get our mitts on Jaguar's new four-door feline as soon as possible. We can feel the shift paddles at our fingertips already. S-Type? What's that?

I don't get it. The XF and the new LR2 are getting rav reviews and ford still wants to unload these two companies. Wasn't Land Rover profitable last year.

1) for several upcoming weeks you will need $100/day
2) you have something that gives you $10/day...
3) ...but you can sell it for $100.000
is it better now?

I'm amazed that such a gorgeous concept got morphed into that ugly thing for production.

What ugly thing? It looks just like a Holden Commodore!
It has no business being a Jag (Jags should be long and low), but it's not ugly by a long shot.

I don't know what it really looks like because I'll never see the car from the angle used in the lead shot. It is the dog's eye-view of a canine looking for some place - some newly Armor-All-ed tire - over which to lift his leg and relieve himself.
Stand up, focus the camera, shoot and post.
Please!

Looks to me like an amalgam of assorted recent Hyundai Sonatas. But that's just me. No Jag, whatever the source.

It looks like a Buick Enclave sedan, lol. Have you driven a Foooooord, lately!

I need to see this in person before passing on an opinion. The pics make it look like some of the design cues are tacked on, but when you read up on the car it sounds like they come together well in person. Either way, Ford needs this to be a success if they are selling the brand as that means they will get more value for it. ...and if they don't sell the brand it will actually add to the bottom line for once as they have always lost money with Jag.

A startled Holden Commodore maybe.

It may be a great ride but it still doesn't look like my vision of a Jag. Will this be the car to "save" Jaguar?? I'm not so sure. I would have thought the car to do that would at least look like a Jag but I guess we'll have to see. It's time Jaguar got its self-respect back. Bring back the good ol' days Jag. Please!

I agree, but I hear rumors that this is their "mid-ship" and the XJ replacement will look more like the concept and be extremely bad-ass in nature, which may save the brand.
Love your user name BTW...long live the 3!!!

I hope your right my friend. I miss the bad-ass Jags. Sleek, British, all around good cars. Perhaps they will pull out of all this.
Love live the king!

There's another glowing review of it over at topgear.com

I guess it's the beginning of the PR blitz.

Much like JCrew, I will wait until I see it in person before passing judgement on photos. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but it is irritating to see so many comments about the car's looks when very few people have actually seen it. I thought the new XK was ugly in photos, but when I saw it in person, it quickly became one of my favorite designs. I think the XF will prove to be the same.
The big thing will be seeing the car in motion. That's when Jaguars really look like what they are. The XK is sensuous in motion.

Lots of people have been saying this car may not be the one for Jag, but look at the likes of Porsche when it brought out the Cayenne. A lot of people were like this will never make it, blah blah blah! And it became the best selling Porsche. I have hope for Jaguar, this vehicle looks good, sounds like it goes well and has a very nice interior (won Interior of the Year Award from Britain's "Car" Magazine). Jag needed to do something different. It has played the retro thing way to long. I am not saying this is the perfect looking Jaguar, but it is a step in the right direction!

i can't wait wait to take this cat out. i can't afford one (i'm still paying off my used xjr), but i already told my buddy at the dealership to save me a spot in line when they receive their first xf.
It is not what i have come to expect from jaguar in terms of long, low and british. but i agree with Atomicrbi the retro thing wasn't working they needed a new canvas to work from. This is what we would have expected the Jaguar to look like had they been progressively modernizing their lines as opposed to continually updating their original designs.

I just wish they would have kept the headlights from the concept. It made the front of the car looks so much more aggressive, more predatory. These headlights change it from Jaguar *snarl* to "Hello Kitty".

So I saw an XF here in NJ today, cruising down I-287 just before Morristown. I don't know if it was manufacturer car or not, but the East Coast operations center for Jaguar is just up the road in Mahwah NJ so that would be my guess. With that said, I have to say it is a handsome car when seen in the flesh. The problem is, well , it doesn’t look particularly Jaguar’ish. It could easily be an Infinity or Lexus – it lacks the immediate road presence and easily recognized styling of a BMW, Mercedes or, more recently, Cadillac. It just needs something more from a styling standpoint.
