Last year General Motors swept the 2007 North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards, with both the Saturn Aura and Chevy Silverado taking home the honors. It looks as if the General has a good shot at repeating last year's sweep with news that four of the six finalists for the 2008 awards are GM vehicles.
The finalists for the 2007 North American Car of the Year award are the Cadillac CTS, Chevy Malibu and Honda Accord, while the truck finalists include the Buick Enclave, Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and the Mazda CX-9. These six vehicles were picked from a lot of 54 new models that went on sale this year, and the winners will be announced on January 13th at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The judging panel includes some 50 automotive journalists, including our own contributor John McElroy, who wrote about judging the vehicles in a previous Autoline on Autoblog report.

We're curious to know which car and truck you think is going to win this year, so feel free to vote in our poll below.

2008 North American Car of the Year
Cadillac CTS 2808 (48.8%)
Chevy Malibu 1505 (26.2%)
Honda Accord 1437 (25.0%)

2008 North American Truck of the Year
Buick Enclave 2102 (38.6%)
Chevy Tahoe Hybrid 1318 (24.2%)
Mazda CX-9 2023 (37.2%)

"they are not built on a truck chassis. They do not have a truck bed."

Aren't most if not all Jeeps built on a unibody platform, even the "trail rated" ones?

More amazing than anything else, is that GM is dominating once again. Two years in a row from a company that a few years ago made vehicles only a die hard fan (with few exceptions) could love.

Lutz and his team are starting to shine. Good job guys!

I don't think the Malibu will beat the CTS. And I love Hondas, but the styling on the new Accord doesn't do much for me. As for the trucks, I wouldn't want either one, so I don't really care to be honest.

CTS and CX-9 .. by far. Honda really messed up the formula with the new Accord while the Malibu still looks junk. The Tahoe has been around far too long and the Enclave ain't good enough to knock the amazing CX-9 off it's pedestal.

As much as I love the CTS I have to admit I am a sucker for the Malibu

Ya know...The Malibu is okay, I just hope GM really put their efforts on the reliability/build quality, because in the past it was not good at all. But the CTS is a winner! Just wait until the CTS-V blow out the German compitetion.

CTS - all around great car that moves Cadillac into true competition with any car in its class around the world, it is the only real north american luxury brand.

Tahoe Hybrid - amazing fuel saving techonolgy applied to a vehicle that actually needs to be more fuel efficient while keeping its functionality as a people hauling and towing vehicle. It is nothing like applying this technology to an already fuel efficient class of car (read Prius). GM is the first to save fuel where it is needed.

I agree with your last statement, I am all for an automobile company that will provide the public with a nice "quality" automobile that will last and not be in the shop for the majority of its life. And in the past GM was NOT producing cars that appealed to me. I own a honda accord now, because of it reliability and quality...but I want GM to win, I want them to be the automobile company that lead the industry.

I love the CTS and the 'Bu but have to vote for the CTS on pure emotion.

And the trucks I love them all but I think design wise the Buick Enclave is groundbreaking but mechanically the Tahoe Hybrid is a mechanical marvel. The CX-9 is just excellent. So again on the emotion +1 to the Enclave.
