click above image for more high-res stills from the Speed Racer film
You may have seen a few tiny pics from the Wachowski brothers' upcoming Speed Racer live action film elsewhere on the web today. Well, our colleagues over at Cinematical gave us the hook up and provided Autoblog with the only high-res shots you'll find on the web, along with an exclusive look at the first trailer for the film (click here to view). It's so new, we literally didn't have a chance to watch it before publishing this post. If you're unfamiliar with the story of Speed Racer, we'll let Cinematical's Erik Davis explain:
Speed Racer stars Emile Hirsch as the aspiring race car driver Speed, who, with help from his family (Mom and Pops played by Susan Sarandon and John Goodman), his girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci) and a little chimp named Chim Chim, builds the unstoppable Mach 5 and teams with the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) to win the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible in order to save his family's business and beat the evil Royalton at his own game.
Hope you enjoy the trailer after the jump and the high-res pics in the gallery below that are perfectly suitable for desktop wallpaper duty.

I wish I was 9 years old again so that I could at least bear watching this trailer.

douchebag spammer. Get a real job and pay for your imac yourself, rather than spamming boards with your referral links.

I'm at work and can't see the streaming video, but if those pictures in the gallery are actual scenes from the movie and not just rendered promotional pics, then this movie is going to be absolutely horrible.

I couldn't see it at first either. I had to restart Firefox. Dunno if that's what you're using, but if so, worth a try.
jamey @ Dec 6th 2007 10:43PM
umm. It looks different, and that good be very good or very bad. time will tell.

Speed Racer FTW!

wow this looks terrible - why does Hollywood f-up every one of my childhood cartoons.
Do they not understand that they are now popular for a reason - they don't need to be re-invented for the big screen. This usually screws up the thing that made it so special the first time around.
Oh and Mach 6 WTF is that

The style is kinda how I imagined it would be. Reminds me a lot of the music video for Cassius - 1999.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but wasn't Speed Racer Asian? I mean, I know that they were drawn with westerners eyes, but I could have sworn he and the main characters were Asian. Ah, but I see you got Asians to play bad guys and flag wavers.
Don't even know why I'm complaining about it, I'm with most of you, this movie looks like it's going to suck anyway.
WillDaThrill @ Dec 6th 2007 11:12PM
Guess he's not a bad guy, ah well. Who's the fat kid? The kid wasn't fat! Guess he's going to loose a couple of races with that extra hundred plus pounds stowed away in that trunk huh?
Tull @ Dec 6th 2007 11:22PM
Anything with John Goodman will be a solid piece of cinematography, that we all can be sure of.
Iridium @ Dec 6th 2007 11:26PM
ugh that looks horrible. It looks like cheesy Matrix effects, mixed with live action meant to look like a cartoon.
stevo @ Dec 6th 2007 11:29PM
Well, here's hoping that Trixie takes her top off.
SPF @ Dec 6th 2007 11:38PM
I'm with you.

I remember reading that the Mach 5 was based off the Chaparral 2, or something.
They could swap out the Mach 5 with the Chaparral 2J, that would be pretty sweet. Then swap all the other cars out with Can-Am racers, and set it in the mid 1960's, and swap out the main character with Jim Hall.
And it's on the nurburgring
yeah, that would be a pretty rad film.
