click above image for more high-res stills from the Speed Racer film

You may have seen a few tiny pics from the Wachowski brothers' upcoming Speed Racer live action film elsewhere on the web today. Well, our colleagues over at Cinematical gave us the hook up and provided Autoblog with the only high-res shots you'll find on the web, along with an exclusive look at the first trailer for the film (click here to view). It's so new, we literally didn't have a chance to watch it before publishing this post. If you're unfamiliar with the story of Speed Racer, we'll let Cinematical's Erik Davis explain:

Speed Racer stars Emile Hirsch as the aspiring race car driver Speed, who, with help from his family (Mom and Pops played by Susan Sarandon and John Goodman), his girlfriend Trixie (Christina Ricci) and a little chimp named Chim Chim, builds the unstoppable Mach 5 and teams with the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) to win the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible in order to save his family's business and beat the evil Royalton at his own game.

Hope you enjoy the trailer after the jump and the high-res pics in the gallery below that are perfectly suitable for desktop wallpaper duty.

I think is going to be a cartoony action movie. I don't think the speed racer was really that good, but on a child's eyes (mine 20years ago) it was awesome. I wont take it seriously, but i think there can be some good to take out...maybe. As long as the racing scenes don't get too long with gadgets and funny graphics i think there can be a plot we can all relate to, because i am sure almost every car guy (when taking a brake from reality), really thinks about being a racecar driver. So they make a movie about it, just focus on how they deliver that need for speed we all have.

An "otaku moment": the cartoon is from Japan, and the name of the series actually was "Mach GO!GO!GO!", funny thing is that "GO" also means "5" in Japanese (actually is not that funny but you know what i mean...), so it would be like a double meaning to the tittle, something that cant be done with a "Mach 6" cause then it would just be like "Mach ROKU!ROkU!ROKU!"

There is a Robotech and a Thundercats movie coming out too...but those have nothing to do with cars, maybe Mechanical or Bio Engineering respectivelly...but not cars.

Robotech sucked ass. To much drama and plot. I thought I was watching a daytime cartoon drama. Hopefully Thundercats won't suck because that cartoon rocked.

        Sorry, that's *Hear the roar*

        Got too excited again.

do you remember MASK and the SilverHawks. Now that is a movie that can be like alien terminator spiderman and something else all together!!!!go silverhawks!!! they also had a nice opening!!! but thundercats gets the #1 spot for sure.
I have very high hopes for the Robotech movie, and am sure that it, like the cartoon, will be better that the respective thundercats version.
Good or not its different, and thats not something we get alot of in movies lately.

I agree, there was continuity, but I wanted to see robots kick each others asses, not a long drawn out conquering of a portion of space. Maybe you enjoyed it, but for me it was a bore; short attention span I guess.

With Thundercats, they woke up, something wasn't right. Cheetara would run around and the kids would throw out some smoke balls. You got an occasional "Snarf, Snarf!" and it was on! Mum-Ra swole up then ther was, "Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, Thundercats Hoooooooooooo!"

        Thundercats are on the move
        Thundercats are loose!
        Feel the magic
        Feel the roar
        Thundercats are loose!
Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, THUNDERCATS! *Guitar riff*

Too much drama in Robotech! The drama was one of the best things about macross/robotech! That's why I liked it when I was growing up. There was continuity, which was missing from american cartoons.

Well, if it sucks. there's always Voltron-Lion Force. Which looks like either Fox, Universal or Disney.

WB/Marvel/DC appears lately to have a track record of raping and ruining our childhood memories. We already know Spielberg saved Transformers to be a decent movie from being another Bay-ized.commerical.

I like how when a movie like this or transformers comes out and everyone says, "this is going to be horrible, blah, blah, blah..." And then like 88% of the haters end up enjoying it anyway. (Myself included, Bumblebee is not a Camaro and Jazz is not a Solstice.)

      Sorry. Had to vent there.

Anyway. I like this. I think the point is to be ludicrously unrealistic, like the original anime. IMO, the screenshot above reminds me alot of Wipeout XL, and that isn't a bad thing.

As for Speed being asian. I agree, he should be played by someone of asian descent as it was a Japanese creation. But its being produced by an American company, so its an unfortunate reality that somethings are going to be compromised to appeal to what Hollywood thinks will sell.

For example, Gokou from Dragonball is going to be played by a white dude (the greatest transgression, i think. What if Superman was played by Will Smith. Might be cool, but guess who would get upset) and Tobey Miguire is playing the lead in Robotech. Both being Japanese properties.

Long story, short. Its for the kids and looks like it could be really cool. Patience.

I don't care who's in it, just remain true to the story. I bet there are only three Asians in this movie. I'm not trying to be all pro-Asian here, just stating an opinion. I'm black and I would most definitly not apprieciate Superman being black. He started out white, he's been successful as a white guy and it remained true to the storyline.

Write it down, take a picture, I don't give a F**K! This movie will suck, mark my words, it will.

"brothers" isn't the right term for them anymore.

It looks like somebody vomited matchbox cars and skittles onto a TV screen while somebody was playing mario kart.

I'm glad to see that a lot of other people thought this looked like iced dog crap on a stick.

It's a very simple story that is being screwed up by the same overpaid out of touch douche bags who screw up most remakes of classic series.

I was uncomfortable throughout the entire 5 minute preview and I'd rather have the memory of the cartoon remain what it is, than endure a full hour and a half of this bad acting plus bad story telling plus bad hair.
