Enter the Rumormill: Chevy Camaro production begins February '09

According to Left Lane News and its inside source, production of the new Camaro will begin on February 16, 2009 at GM's Oshawa plant in Ontario. Naturally, you won't be able to pick up Chevy's newest hotness until sometime the following month, but any confirmation of production dates is a step in the right direction.
GM execs had already said that production of some Camaros would begin in late 2008, but most of those would be doled out to engineers and executives to make any last minute changes before production hits full bore in the following months.
The other important production date is for the Camaro convertible, which is rumored to begin on December 7, 2009 – not great for wintertime cruising, but again, this is all unconfirmed.
Our only concern with the production of the coupe would be how late it's coming to the game. Challenger production will begin a full year before and the Mustang has been here the whole time, which leaves Camaro fans twiddling their thumbs until 2009 at the earliest.

It's a TERRIFIC looking vehicle. Pure Camaro. And probably the best interpretation ever of a pony car.
But, why in the hell is it taking GM so long to get this thing on the streets?
The New New Chrysler will have the Challenger out in Spring 2008--a whole year earlier.

^Tool, because they had no intention of producing the Camaro.
The word was that the crowd caught them by surprise, and they had to flesh out the car overnight.

How long have they been showing the concept now? I swear this car will be five years old before it hits the streets and then they'll wonder why it doesn't fly off the lots... your timing is killing this thing!

If you put the money you were going to spend on a camaro in a CD, by the time the camaro actually comes out you'll have accrued enough interest to buy a new vette.

It will be ready for a RE-STYLING by then! Remember the Chrysler Maserati TC? Shown for years... and by the time it was released? The everyday Sebring looked just like it!

you mean the LeBaron?

I am already bored of this car. I love camaros.. call me crazy but already the Gen 4 Camaros are looking better to me than this one.

GM needs to put this car into production at the latest February 2008 not 2009.

Feb 08 is a good idea and I think GM feels the heat.

Anyone who this would have appealed to would have bought a Mustang by now. Too late.

The Camaro appeals to me and no, i am not buying a Mustang. I will wait till summer of 2009.
CJ 3:17PM (12/04/2007)
That and the Challanger right around the corner does not help. I won't say dollar short but I'm pretty sure GM is a day late with this one.
TBlueMax 3:22PM (12/04/2007)
I doubt it. All the folks I've met who wanted a Mustang, bought a Mustang. I know a couple guys waiting for the Challenger and several more who have been waiting for the Camaro.
I have yet to meet anyone who "needs" a pony car that is buying on a first-available basis.
Although I used to own a '67 Mustang notchback way back in high school, I'm one of those folks who will gladly wait another 1.5+ years for the Camaro to be released. While the current Mustang is the best Mustang Ford has released since 1970, I'm much more interested in picking up the new Camaro however long it may take.

lol
pusstang its old name now, no matter how much ford tries with bulitt, GT5KR, GT500KR. thing is the pusstang is done.
hundreds of guys are waiting for the poor guy to die so they could see their shelby's appreciate.
pusstang gives you the ability to get RWD muscle at 20K or so. thats abt it.
Joe 5:11PM (12/04/2007)
I'm not sure what makes the current Mustang a "pussstang," though it mustn't be the fact that a stock Mustang GT will go 13.5 in the 1/4, while the GTO did roughly the same, for another $6-8K more.
Further, while the Challenger and Camaro are going to be packing more horsepower at their launch, the new Boss motors that Ford is going to drop into the Mustang, packing 400+ in stock GT trim, will be more than enough to keep up with the overfed, overweight Chevy and Dodge offerings. Hell, the V6 in the new Mustang is going to be putting out 300 HP, stock, and they're talking about putting out a "Twin-Force" version of that motor, which would be twin-turbo'd. How about the new SRT-8 Challenger getting it's butt kicked by a V6 "Pussstang?"

It will be ancient, both in mechanical and design terms, by that time.
Then again, it took Nissan close to 6 years to put the GT-R on the road.

It should have been released, and nearly ready for a facelift by that time.
That is ridiculous. This car has been touted for the last calendar year at least, including product placement in a summer movie... and it is going to take another 14+ months to be released? Nearly 2 and a half years of publicity, with no real product? It'll be in Transformers 2 before it gets into people's hands...
That is pretty ridiculous. Nothing can live up to that kind of hype, and people have shorter attention spans than perhaps they should, but nobody should really be expected to wait like that, without moving on to something that is actually available. Maybe some devotees will wait, but it just seems like poor planning, on GM's part.

You can't really make the argument with the Transformers spot as Michael Bay asked GM for the car, not the other way around. It was Bay's input that put the car in the movie, not GMs.
Big J 3:34PM (12/04/2007)
I agree, when this car finally hits the lots the average consumer (most people) will think, "didn't I see this car in a movie a year or two ago?". Its novelty will be far worn off by then. I can't believe this car isn't being produced until 2009 based on its prior exposure, GM missed the boat on marketing this car.
