Land Rover Defender 110 SVX earmarked for Australia

So, that UK-only Land Rover Defender SVX? Turns out it's not UK-only. Well, the Defender 90 version is, but Blighty is not the only market getting an SVX to celebrate LR's 60th birthday. The Australians will blow out the candles with the Defender 110 SVX. The longer-wheelbase Outback stormer gets the same visual treatment as its shorter Brit-market brother, meaning a new grille surround, upgraded lighting, the spiffy five-spoke wheels, and a Recaro-adorned upgraded interior, among other things. 36 copies of the dressed-up yet rough-and-tumble Defender 110 SVX will arrive in Land Rover showrooms Down Under next year.

PRESS RELEASE:
Special Edition Defender 110 SVX Model To Celebrate Land Rover's 60th Anniversary Next Year

Land Rover will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2008 with a special edition of the iconic Defender, whose origins can be traced directly back to the original 1948 Land Rover. While most of the 25,000 Defenders produced each year are working tools for everyone from farmers and foresters to aid agencies, the SVX special edition model is the most stylish and feature-packed version that Land Rover has ever produced.

With metallic black paintwork and subtle satin black graphic decals, the Defender 110 SVX will be available as seven-seat station wagon.

Distinctive exterior features have a contrasting silver finish, such as the unique 'Defender' and 'SVX' badges, tubular side-steps, and the bold surround for the front grille and new, clear-lens headlamps. The SVX will also feature new, 'diamond turned' five-spoke alloy wheels, a reinforced aluminium front undershield and clear LED rear lights.

To bring the SVX interior right up to date, it will be equipped with custom-designed Recaro front seats, a distinctive alloy gear knob, a new audio system (with subwoofer and USB socket), iPod cradle and Garmin satellite navigation.

Go anywhere

"The Defender 110 SVX looks very different to a spartan 1948 Land Rover, but it's still an essentially practical vehicle that will enable you to go almost anywhere," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director. "The new and much more refined diesel engine introduced earlier this year has been a great success with customers, and for those who want the ultimate Defender, we thought that the SVX special edition would be an ideal way to mark Land Rover's 60th birthday."

Only 36 Defender 110 SVX special edition models will sold in Australia. Production of the Defender SVX will begin in Winter 2008, with deliveries to Australian customers in Spring 2008.

The first ever Land Rover made its public debut on April 30, 1948 at the Amsterdam Motor Show. Created by Maurice Wilkes as a practical workhorse vehicle, the original Land Rover evolved through several series before being renamed as the Defender in 1990. It also provided the basis for Land Rover's unique position as a manufacturer solely of 4x4 vehicles, now represented by a five-strong vehicle line-up - the Range Rover Vogue, Range Rover Sport, Discovery 3, Freelander 2 and the iconic Defender.

60th Anniversary Celebrations

Australian celebrations to mark the 60th birthday of Land Rover will be held at Cooma (NSW) over the 2008 Easter weekend, March 21st to the 24th. The event will be sponsored by Land Rover Australia and is being organised by the Land Rover Clubs of Victoria, Sydney and the ACT, as well as the Range Rover Club of Sydney.
