Get your sleeping bags ready: Nissan GT-R pre-orders begin Jan. 1st

Click the image above for more shots of the 2008 Nissan GT-R.
That's right kiddies. According to the LA Times, preorders for the 1,500 U.S.-bound Nissan GT-Rs will begin on the January 1st, 2008. As a reminder, the cost of entry is just over $70,000 and whatever your local dealer decides to tack onto the bottom of the sticker -- possibly upwards of $15k. Somehow we doubt there'll be a line forming a few days before the calendar change (those who can afford it have people for that kind of thing), but we could think of worse ways to spend New Year's Eve – like queuing up for a Versa.

people will buy this car for more price. and for the next year, the car will still have much higher price then the msrp, cuase all the dealers that couldn't get it this year will get it for the fist time and will be wanting to make money too. its limited to 1500 a year. ppl with money will pay whatever the dealer puts it up for.

$70K? $85K?
Try $125K to start.
1500 units is NOTHING.

Almost doubling the cars value in mark-ups? Doubtful. Even I wouldn't pay that for the new GT-R. The whole point of the car is to beat the 911 Turbo for a lot less, not the same cash.

Nissanfreak...if anybody, YOU should understand.
This car has reached cult status and it's not even out yet in America.
nissanfreak87 4:08PM (11/26/2007)
I know, but 95% of the people that have gotten it to cult status don't have 125K to drop on their dream car, I could see paying $85 if I were closer to 30 and was bringing home some good money, but I'm in college so I don't, but even if I were making $300K a year, the principal of paying twice a car's sticker is ridiculous.
The STI had a cult following too, but it was hardly marked up when it was introduced, same with the Evo.
I could see a dumb dealer marking it $100K, and having it sit for a while
FrankTheCrank 4:16PM (11/26/2007)
Nissanfreak...point taken. Dumb dealers will do exactly what you say.
The thing is, if it's so limited, I see some paying the jacked up dealer price, then slapping it on eBay for more money once the initial run is sold....and at that point, $125K will be the norm.

probably nissan stealerships are going to be the #1 thing that will drive potential customers away from that car. if they are going to mark up the car $15k and up i might as well buy a carrera 911 s on a dealership that treats me great(not as some other dude buying a versa) and if im not picky with the color and options i easily could drive my 911 the same day!
plus i will get the prestige surrounded by the whole porsche brand. specially here in the U.S. where nissan has never had a super car before.
im really looking foward to see how will nissan manage the whole GTR buying experience.

why not the LS2/LS7? 3:56PM (11/26/2007)
Dates for preorders mean nothing. If you line up, you're a fool. Go in right now and bribe your way into making a pre-pre-order which will be submitted on Jan 1.
I think $125K is too high for this car, even for 1500 units. I'm sure someone will pay that much, but not many.

And people say the Corvette has a cheap looking interior?! I would much rather a Z06 as both the interior and exterior aesthetics are much better (at least IMO anyway.).

the only cheap part of the GT-Rs interior is the HVAC panel, which is pretty bad, but the seats are very nice, the doors look very classy, the dash is padded leather, and it has the signature GT-R control screen, which gives instant baller status. That's my opinion, I think both cars could be improved, but hey, I'd rather have either one of those cars and $60K in the bank over a 911 Turbo
why not the LS2/LS7? 4:30PM (11/26/2007)
I think the whole interior looks rather cheap.
Know how much I care? I don't.
High performance sometimes means losing a little luxury to trim some weight.
Improve the G37 interior some more (it is lacking too) and leave this at "well functioning".

It depends on persons' perspective.
If you like the slick muscle looking car, go for corvette.
If you want to have a good-looking Japanese style, go for GTR.
Well... lets look at the price compared with the performance.
Hands down GTR.
Also it depends on who is buying the car.
If a wealthy person is looking for a fun cheap car to drive, of course GTR.
Mez Jr 5:34PM (11/26/2007)
@chiohmann:
Corvette is not a muscle car. Traditionally a "muscle car" is a car that has pedestrian underpinnings and a giant motor dropped in with some go-fast looking scoops etc added for good measure. the 'vette large displacement motor nonwithstanding is a sports car. Strangely enough the Evo, WRX and others fit the muscle car ideology more than people would like to admit.
But I agree with your principle, the Corvette is very much an American sports car, in looks and execution, while the GT-R is highly Japanese. Pick your poison gentlemen.

I'm a corvette fan as well as GTR fan. I respect these cars both, but you gotta take back that comment, seriously.
mooj 4:50PM (11/26/2007)
i'm actually somewhat outraged at how expensive this thing came out to be.

Are you kidding me? It costs about as much as the other car that it shares similar performance numbers with, so how is it expensive?
Geoff 4:01PM (11/26/2007)
There is no way this car will go for $125k. The people that pay those premiums are generally in the older demographic and the older demographic views this car as a drift-mobile. There is no way it will support a premium close to twice its MSRP.
