Early details on the 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid leaked onto the web yesterday morning, and you can read Damon's early rundown on the essentials here. Now that Cadillac has released the full info and tech specs, we can break it down pretty simply. The Cadillac Escalade Hybrid uses the exact same 2-Mode hybrid powertrain as both the Yukon and Tahoe hybrids. Unlike its platform cousins, however, the Escalade does not incorporate any weight-saving measures. It does incorporate Hybrid badges in the fender vents and "H" logos by the rear windows. We're assuming (and hoping) the giant "H Y B R I D" door decals are to make the display car stand out on the floor at the auto show down in Miami this week.
We talked to a Caddy rep who told us that the decision was made not to diminish the Escalade in any way, so the seats retain all their stuffing, the front end gets no aero tweaks, and the bodywork doesn't get any lightweight elements like the Chevy and GMC trucks. Now, according to GM, the use of the hybrid system increases fuel economy by at least 50% anyway. If you figure that the standard 6.2L Escalade is good for 9 or 10 real-world MPG combined, it should be good for at least 18 mpg or so on the highway. We doubt it'll match the 21/22 (2WD) and 20/20 (4WD) city/hwy EPA ratings of the Tahoe Hybrid simply because the 'Slade outweighs it by 110 pounds in 2WD form and 181 when equipped with 4WD.
That said, if the Escalade really can actually get mileage in the mid to upper-teens it's an impressive feat, no matter how you look at it. This is a 3-ton truck after all, and we've driven midsize crossovers that struggle to get that kind of fuel economy. Those interested in towing stuff can pull 6,000 lbs with the 2WD truck and 5,700 lbs with the 4WD variant. As for the target audience, it's basically Escalade shoppers willing to pony up an additional premium to use less gas or to simply flash some green cred via the Hybrid badges.

PRESS RELEASE
ESCALADE HYBRID: CADILLAC PREMIERES THE FIRST HYBRID IN A LARGE LUXURY SUV
MIAMI – Cadillac announced the world premiere of the Escalade Hybrid, the world's first fuel-saving hybrid applied to a large luxury SUV. Powered by an innovative, fuel-saving 2-Mode Hybrid system, Escalade Hybrid will deliver more than a 50-percent improvement in fuel economy in city driving – all while delivering the same distinctive style, segment-leading features and full-size capability that have made the Escalade an icon.
"Escalade, already the sales and style leader among large luxury SUVs, now adds the desirability of a fuel-saving, technically advanced hybrid system," said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. "The arrival of Escalade Hybrid means that consumers can now use less fossil fuel, reduce emissions and still enjoy the benefits of a full-size luxury SUV."
The Hybrid goes on sale in the summer of 2008 and is the newest example of Escalade's technology leadership.
"No other manufacturer offers a hybrid than can seat eight luxuriously while simultaneously carrying or trailering lots of cargo comfortably," Taylor said. "And no hybrid delivers the dramatic presence that is synonymous with Escalade."
Escalade Hybrid is available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. It delivers up to 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg) of usable towing capacity on 2WD models and 5,700 pounds (2,565 kg) on 4WD models. All of Escalade's standard comfort and convenience features are included. This includes an eight-inch, touch-screen navigation system that displays performance readouts of the 2-Mode Hybrid system on the screen.
Escalade Hybrid extends Cadillac's leadership in the large luxury SUV category. Escalade sales have grown in the face of changing sales trends and increased competition. In fact, Escalade sales increased 22 percent in September over year-ago sales. Other models in the Escalade lineup include the extended-length Escalade ESV and the versatile Escalade EXT luxury-utility truck. The Hybrid model is available with the standard Escalade body style.
Patented 2-Mode Hybrid technology
The Escalade's 2-Mode Hybrid system allows it to return exceptional fuel economy in both city and highway while delivering the capabilities of a true luxury SUV. In city driving, this advanced hybrid power system enables Escalade to launch and drive low speeds on electricity alone. As additional power is demanded, the system blends output from the battery and gas engine smoothly.
GM's patented 2-Mode Hybrid system consists of an advanced electrically variable transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). These systems work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 Gen IV gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late-intake valve closing (LIVC) technology. AFM enables the V-8 engine to seamlessly shut off half of its cylinders when less power is needed, such as during highway cruising. This new hybrid system not only enables the Escalade Hybrid to drive low speeds on electricity alone, it also allows the 6.0L V-8 engine to operate in its more economical four-cylinder mode for longer periods.
The key to Escalade's 2-Mode hybrid system is that the electric power used to propel the vehicle is generated by the hybrid system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is used to move the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed.
The 2-Mode Hybrid system provides seamless, dependable power on demand in an efficient package. In fact, its electric motor is less than half the size of those in single-mode hybrid systems. This technology was developed and is still used in fleets of hybrid transit buses on the streets today in dozens of major North American cities. Scaled-down for use in full-size SUVs, the 2-Mode system delivers fuel savings where it is needed most – in large vehicles with high levels of capability. It is a core part of GM's energy diversity efforts, which are centered on reducing dependence on petroleum, improving fuel economy, reducing emissions and minimizing the automobile's impact on the environment.
Cadillac's smooth and quiet power
Acoustic details specific to the Hybrid model ensure it delivers the superior luxury that has been an Escalade hallmark since its inception. The details include:
• A new exhaust system and resonator specially tuned for the 6.0L LIVC engine's Active Fuel Management operation. It ensures comfortable interior acoustics and a pleasant exhaust note during both V-4 and V-8 operation
• An electrically driven, 300-volt air conditioning compressor reduces vibration and allows the HVAC system to cool the passenger compartment even when the gasoline engine is shut off. It includes the standard tri-zone climate system
• An electrically driven, 42-volt variable-assist power steering reduces vibration and provides up to a 0.5-mpg fuel economy improvement by reducing parasitic losses common in belt-driven hydraulic systems
• The Energy Storage System cooling system's internal fan is tuned to be quiet at low vehicle speeds, when the fan could more easily be heard by the occupants.
Escalade aesthetic
The Escalade Hybrid retains the qualities that have made it the leading large luxury SUV and a standard-bearer of Cadillac's overall product renaissance. It is instantly identifiable as a Cadillac and incorporates styling cues from the landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents.
The Escalade's warm and inviting interior features a premium layout. It is available in two colors, Ebony and Cashmere. Standard features include a distinctive instrument panel; gauges with white needles and blue light inlays with continuously lit, white-LED backlighting; Nuance leather-covered seats; leather-covered door trim and center console; and a power-assisted rear liftgate that opens and closes with the touch of a button.

Wow, nice technology. Given the number of trucks in the USA, this will make a difference.
Sam @ Nov 12th 2007 2:59PM
The mileage claims in the article are wrong. I borrowed a friends 2008 Ext and got 14 around town and even more amazingly got 19 fully loaded with a bed full of heavy furniture and a roof top carrier on the highway. This was a 518 mi trip. The six speed trans is much more efficent than the 4 speed in the Tahoe and Yukon. With this said I think the Hybrid will only get slightly less milage then its cousins.
Andrew @ Nov 9th 2007 8:57AM
This is amazing. The amount of fuel that GM will save by making its trucks hybrid is SIGNIFICANTLY greater than the amount of fuel that say, a fleet of prius' would save. And given that such a high percentage of people in north america drive big trucks, this would equate to a lot less gasoline consumed. For an escalade to be getting ratings in the high teens for mileage is amazing to me. That is one big truck for those who know nothing, nor do they care about trucks. Kudos to gm.
henrykrinkle @ Nov 9th 2007 8:58AM
The fact that no weight-saving measures were used to at least offset the added weight of the hybrid system makes it clear who this vehicle is intended for - environmentalist poseurs.
Jason @ Nov 9th 2007 9:48AM
how is that any different than most other hybrids? lol.
henrykrinkle @ Nov 9th 2007 10:03AM
It's different than it's own stablemates, the Tahoe and Yukon that use some aluminum body pieces, lighter seats and a more aerodynamic front end to maximize gas savings. None of that was done in the Escalade because all they wanted was to be able to stick the hybrid badges on it. The fact is that the people who end up buying this will probably never even check their mileage because it's not that important to them - all they care about is that it says "Hybrid".
Frank @ Nov 9th 2007 9:05AM
That is an amazing mpg increase for such a large truck. This bodes well for this technology when applied to smaller platforms. I can see a 2 mode Malibu for example getting mileage in the mid to upper 30s.
Pete @ Nov 9th 2007 9:13AM
You guys are absolutely retarded. A mazdaspeed 3 gets 18 mpg city and that's if you're not driving it like you stole it.
6mpg difference in city driving is a big deal, perhaps not for you because you're a broke ass and anything less than free is going to make you cry. Then again you won't be purchasing any of these vehicles so it really doesn't matter...
Norris Shelton @ Nov 9th 2007 9:23AM
Very nice. I can't wait to see them hit the streets. My wife loves her '05 ESV. I secretly covet her ride. I might have to get one of these for myself if it will fit my side of the garage.
... and yes, I do carpool to work.
h8rain @ Nov 9th 2007 9:37AM
"As for the target audience, it's basically Escalade shoppers willing to pony up an additional premium to use less gas or to simply flash some green cred via the Hybrid badges."
My vote is the green cred. :)
Frank @ Nov 9th 2007 9:42AM
Pete, you are correct about the city mpg comparisons. Who would think a Mazdaspeed 3 gets the same mpg as a Escalade. Yes the 3 is a high performance car which I like a lot, but why does it not get better mileage? That is the other part of the question to ask.
Pete @ Nov 9th 2007 10:04AM
Frank, I wasn't attacking you. I just happened to hit the reply button on your comment.
It was more of a general statement to the naysayers...
the marais @ Nov 9th 2007 9:44AM
Here's an idea: Ditch the label "hybrid" and just have all cars run on that technology.
Dsuupr @ Nov 9th 2007 10:49AM
At this time all of the manufactures would file bankruptcy or we would be paying $5000 to $10,000 more for our cars. Not worth it.
I think it's a great start. If GM can get more people to buy the 2 mode, then the cost will come down and eventually they will have it as an available option on all of their cars.
The last thing ANYONE should do is not support any manufacture putting a hybrid system on their vehicles. Any vehicle.
Good job GM. Keep it up, and please keep introducing both versions of your hybrid in everything you make.
Tim @ Nov 9th 2007 11:19AM
Gm is really missing the point with these behemoth hybrids. They should instead be focusing on the Acadia/Enclave/Saturn whatever. The truck market quickly changed in the past year and since they were developing these things for 3-4 years they can't respond quick enough to the demand for X-overs. Going from 14 mpg to 19 mpg is no big deal when gas is $3.5
TBlueMax @ Nov 9th 2007 8:54AM
I would love to see the 2-mode hybrid system paired with GM's direct-injected 3.6L V6 and installed in the Acadia/Enclave/Outlook - 300hp + decent MPG for a massive family hauler. I suspect the next round of updates will be pairing the standard (non-D.I.) 3.6L V6 currently found in the Outlook and VUE XR with the 2-mode hybrid for an expanded Green Line portfolio for Saturn.
Guenther @ Nov 9th 2007 9:40AM
14 to 19 miles per gallon is a big deal- based on just 12000miles/year, thats 1000/month. divided by the milage, its 71.4 gallons/ month vs 52.6 gal/mo. - about 19 gallons times $3.50- is about $66. ok- nevermind- that isn't squat. Then again, I drive 3 times that much, so it would save more like $200. that will pay for a 10k price premium. Hm- doesn't quite get there, does it. But say I play for the 'Niners- my SF fans want to see an enviro-image.....
JIM MBONGO @ Nov 9th 2007 10:16AM
Hi Tim,
This is a fantastic idea. But I think you'are the one who is missing the point im this case. You probably don't know that GM is already working on the Saturn version (3.9 v6 engine whcih is the same engine used in Acadia, Outlook and Enclave) of the Two-mode. If timing is good, we will be able to see Two-mode application in these cars by the end of 2008.
Snowdog @ Nov 9th 2007 11:39AM
The bigger question is who really NEEDS these monster trucks? There are simply ways to get 18mpg in the city that don't involve a $10000 hybrid option. Like driving a slightly less monstrous vehicle.
These things are an abomination IMO.
wiseassoffice @ Nov 9th 2007 11:48AM
Snowdog obviously never needs to tow anything or move around 4 kids in snowy Michigan. This vehicle is perfect.
