The '69 Shelby GT500 convertible and '68 Shelby GT500-KR were two of my favorite childhood "dream" cars. Having owned (and constantly serviced) a '67 Mustang notchback while in high school, I have a fondness for these (Shelby) Mustangs that has not been diminished by the seemingly endless release of current special edition Mustangs and variants.
Hopefully we'll get to see more pictures of Carroll's GT500 as the auction approaches.

I love the continual bashing of the S197 Mustang because there are so many tuners out there offering their own flavor.
For the record once again, Ford only makes or authorizes the standard V6 and GT cars, the Shelby GT and GT500 and soon the Bullitt.
I still don't get how Joe Blow in Missouri or Kansas making their own tuner package constitutes as watering down Mustang's image. If anything, the number of tuners out there willing to take a business risk by offering their own version goes to show that the car is so popular, not that it's getting killed by being overdone.
On top of that, I bet you can find just as many "tuner" EVOs, STIs, Porsches, Bimmers, etc. out there. They just aren't being found as easily and not reported as much by autoblog.
