Tokyo Motor Show: Nissan R.D:B.X Concept

Click above image for more pictures of the Nissan Round Box
The R.D:B.X... as in Round Box. Could this be a hint of what will replace the (currently) JDM only Nissan Cube? Japan's youth, who are already way too cool for the current model, let alone the Toyota Bb (Scion XB), should certainly hope so.
Check out that amazing interior, complete with a totally digital dash, in our high-res gallery of live shots below.

PRESS RELEASE:
Round Box (R.D/B.X)
Youth-Oriented Compact Convertible Provides Occupants With Sensation of Speed and Exhilaration
- Round Box represents a new take on open-air motoring, providing exhilaration for all passengers - not just the driver - through its uniquely shared experience of fresh air stimulation, a sensation of speed and easy-to-use high-spec features.
- An innovative, interactive "Play Catch" system allows the driver and passengers - including those in the rear seat - to share entertainment and driving information.
- The "right sized" space to facilitate communication between the four passengers. Never-before-experienced value created by combinations of heterogeneous elements.
- Contributing to the shared sensation of speed are unique "road surface windows," small glass panels placed close to the ground on both sides of the car, providing passengers with a view of the rapidly passing road surface, without the risk of road contact.

Despite that is was designed in Japan, the car looks actually very good.

I agree, this is could be a good XB contender here in the U.S.... That is of course if we could ever get a radically designed car like this on our shores. I actually like it.... it's weird... quirky... but I'd drive it!
Where do you put the roof in convertible mode? Any news on powerplants? A hybrid, or small diesel would be a great addition to it's functionality. Put a car like this with ample interior space and 50+ MPG on the market, and they would have a hard time keeping up with demand.

It looks like something that the guys in checkered pants and silver hair would love to drive to and around the golf course in. Does it have an optional rack in the back for a couple bags of clubs?
It's just goofy.

sweet interior, cylon-inspired exterior, not really my style Nissan. Bring more Urge based stuff out!

This isn't terribly new, it's just an updated and slightly larger version of the 1999 Nissan Hypermini. They had a few in Pasadena and elsewhere until Nissan took them away.

OK, It looks to me like a design straight out of Popular Mechanics circa 1956 for a 21st century design. Either PM had a good grasp on the future, or designers these days are checking out old periodicals at the library.
