Regardless of how well thought out and efficient this car might be, if the thing looks ugly, it's still ugly. I'm ecstatic about super efficient cars--I like the Prius--but the Prius is butt ugly to me. Doesn't say anything about my world view, other than I don't like the styling of the Prius. I can appreciate its aerodynamics though, even if I don't want to look at it for too long.

This new fit is okay. Honda was founded after WWII (in essence not a war mfgr though the founder did make piston rings for Toyota as an entry level engineer).

Honda instead made a company that promotes line level employees to make recommendations and suggestions - even entry level (promising) engineers get to rotate into F1 programs and discover what unlimited budgets are. They then apply that technology to their cars. Look at a Detroit company - you raise your voice you'd get beat in the parking lot showing up the others. Especially the lazy seniority.

On top of that Honda treats its employees with respect, it's management is not comprised of accountants and sleazy sales guys. Making the fact that they do not need to be unionized - in extent ruining their corporate culture. The high level execs make a fraction of what the Detriot execs make. Note every person on the BOD of Honda are engineers by trade.

So just summing it down to legacy costs is quite simple minded. It's the smarth growth and respect that Honda treat its customers and employees. That makes for a healthy organization and great products.

blogged to death

Comments on

Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, and Nissan design and build cars in the US, and you don't hear anything (much) about problems there.

CoffeeJones

Comments on

Well, for what it's worth all those other countries you mentioned all happen to have single-payer universal healthcare, whereas GM gets stuck with a huge healthcare bill.

The healthcare cost is actually what's dragging GM's labor costs through the roof, not the wages/hour that they pay.

tekdemon

Comments on

I was really interested in the new FIT until I read that it has run-flat tires and no spare.
