Fifth Gear takes the MINI Clubman for a spin

The MINI Clubman isn't a major breakthrough over the current Cooper but it does have one glaring distinction worth taking a closer look at and that's the suicide-style rear opening door. Fifth Gear's Johnny Smith shows us all there is to like and loathe about the new car in sunny Madrid.

I like it. Now, does it come in an "S" version?

Yes, it's available in all of the regular Mini trim levels.

Hmmmm, I like it, though I'm a fan of small wagons and seem to fall into the target demographic for this car (mid thirties, married, one toddler at home, like the Mini but can't fit the stroller in the back).
Down sides, though; The trim around the back door is just wonky looking. Would be much better if they had access doors on both sides... like every pickup truck on the market and even the Saturn Ion coupe for Pete's sake.
Any hope that the Diesel version will make it to the States in the future?

Heaven help you if you live if a RHD market...
BMW have really dropped the ball on this one. That suicide door should change sides depending on which market it is selling in. It will cost a little extra but I am not having my kids climb out of the back seat into the flow of traffic.

Apparently, BMW said they would have had to remap the fuel tank and fuel lines to accommodate left-side suicide doors. I suppose the cost involved outweighed BMW's expected gain in Britain and Japan.
