For those of you who worship at the alter of Playstation, life is about to get more bearable. Its name is Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (demo), and it will be available to download for free on October 20th. The move is an effort to keep thumbs from atrophying after the long hiatus between GT4 and the new prologue installment, due out in stores December 13th (at least in Japan). The launch is coinciding with the Tokyo Motor Show, where a number of vehicles that have parts in the game will be revealed in the really-real-world the day before. Among the models already confirmed: the new Nissan GT-R and Mitsubishi Evolution X, plus 16 other manufacturers, including Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. Three new tracks are also set to make their debut in GT5, including Fuji, Daytona and Suzuka.
More is expected from Sony on the 23rd, so we'll try to keep you abreast between sake shooters and toro binges.

You neglected to mention that the October download is for a *demo* of Prologue, not the full version of Prologue itself. Sony announced this weeks ago, and it also says as much in your sourced article.

awesome, I was getting tired of just one track :)

I'm always disapointed at the Swedish car showing in Gran Turismo.
Two frikken Volvo's last time I think it was and one was under-rated in the power department (the 240 Turbo) and the S60 was a front drive only with a mid range engine.
What about the Volvo R?
Or a T5-R?
A Saab Viggen?
The Pikes Peak Saab 900 from the mid-90's with 700hp? Not the silver ones that did really well but that wild orange one.
Maybe even some of the older German cars.
It would be nice.
Puter @ Oct 13th 2007 4:49PM
Maybe because Saab = rebadged GMs or Subaru? .. its sad, but, Saab is just a name now.
SPG @ Oct 13th 2007 5:30PM
You mean the 9-7x and the 9-2x are not real Saab's? So yes, I know what you mean Puter and I sadly agree.
I feel the 9-5 is still a real Saab and I feel that the current 9-3 is pretty close as well.
So how about some 900's, SPG's , 9000 Aero's, Viggen's, 9-3 Aero's and maybe a Sonnett and a 99.

This information isn't correct the prologue demo will be out on 20 OCT.
Damon Lavrinc @ Oct 13th 2007 5:27PM
Sorry. Got into the sake too early. It's been corrected. Ditto for dj's comment.

Did you mean, this will be the first time Suzuka and Fuji will appear in GT5? Suzuka Circuit already existed in GT4, and Fuji Speedway has been a part of the family since at least GT3... I never really played GT2 or 1, it may have been included there, as well.
SPG:
Polyphony doesn't have complete control over whose cars go into the game. People have complained about car selection in GT for years and years, but Polyphony maintains that a lot of the cars and brands they want to represent in the game can't be included because the manufacturers refuse to sell Polyphony the rights. So blame the manufacturer, not the game company, for at least part of that. ;]

Alter? Altar? Altar.
Azrael4h @ Oct 13th 2007 5:50PM
So to compensate, PD shoved 60+ Nissan Skylines and 30+ Honda Civics down our throat.
I like the Skyline, in fact I wish it was in the US at a lower price point than the G35/37. But 60+ of the same car, generally in the same three generations, ignoring the older generations for the most part, while Plymouth only had two cars is ridiculous.
I want to upgrade from GT4, but the car selection had better be improved greatly, or I won't bother.
zamafir @ Oct 13th 2007 6:27PM
Given that you own GT4 I'll venture out on a limb and assume you're painfully aware, as is the rest of the GT fanbase, that the game relies on extensive REAL testing of cars to map the physics of said vehicles. If Kazunori Yamauchi can't get his hands on a car to take around the track, it won't be in the game.
If you have a PS3, try the current demo, it's wonderful to see the franchise approach forza levels of graphic detail finally (as it's no longer restricted by cumbersome ps2 hardware).
Azrael4h @ Oct 13th 2007 7:29PM
I'm aware. Some of the cars that would have made sense, however, are much, much easier to obtain than the ones in game. For every Superbird and '71 'Cuda, there are a dozen surviving '70 Dusters. Even restricting yourself to the 340 model. Not to mention the fastback Baracudas that rode the A Body platform. The classic Mustang abounds everywhere in the US, yet the only one represented is a rarity, the Shelby-touched version.
As to the PS3, I don't own one yet. I hit a financial snag, but the main reason is that I have a certain standard that a system needs to reach before I'll buy one. While I am positive the PS3 will reach it, it does not now, so it remains off the list. So does the Wii. If I wasn't boycotting Microsoft products, the X360 hasn't reached that point either.
It wasn't until just after the PS3 was released that I bought a PS2, so don't think much of it.

"Approach Forza levels of graphic detail"?
Forza looked like crap.
Forza 2 has disappointing graphics also. It is absolutely no great shakes graphically.
If you had said PGR3, I might understand.
But if you use Forza as a measuring stick of graphics, you clearly don't get out much.
In the last gen, GT4 outclassed Forza by a mile, and Rallisport Challenge 2 surpassed GT4 in almost every way graphically (only lacking any resolution above 480p).
In the cur gen, Forza 2 never even caught up to PGR3, which was a launch title!
Forza 2 plays well though, too bad the steering wheel for it is so atrocious.
Azrael4h @ Oct 13th 2007 10:59PM
I actually prefer GT4 over Forza, by the entire length of the 'Ring. I'll gladly sacrifice a few polygons and pixels for more cars and tracks, especially when the GT4 'Ring can match up somewhat well vs pictures and videos of the real thing, and Forza's looks like a NASCAR oval.
That's even accounting for the fact that half of GT4's cars are Civics, Skylines, and NSX's.

Anyone know if this will be available for the PS2? I really want this game, and am willing to buy the PS3 for it, but obviously id rather save myself $600 and get a PS2 version.
mxrz @ Oct 13th 2007 9:04PM
No chance this game will come out on the PS2.
aman @ Oct 13th 2007 9:22PM
ah fk it. ill just get myself an x360.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 13th 2007 10:43PM
Save yourself $600? Have you priced a PS3 lately?
It's been $500 for the 60GB unit for months now. And word is, it will be $400 for a 40GB unit on November 2nd.
aman @ Oct 14th 2007 1:30AM
sorry I was talking Canadian dollars. we are seriously getting fking ripped off here. did you know that the Canadian dollar is worth more then the US dollar? that means I can go down there and buy a PS3 and lose less than 400 dollars. the life of a Canadian. I hate it.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 14th 2007 1:44AM
Yeah. Seriously. You're getting boned.
I wonder if Sony will ever adjust for the new currency rates?
