The reason being is that people use them for pointless things, such as puttering about town and wasting countless amounts of fuel. But in true form, SUVs are used as an offroad terrain engulfing machine. Sure, you could say that trucks will also do the job, but I would rather drive an SUV than a truck.

On the other hand, this R50 looks pretty cool. Would I buy one? That said, since most people who buy SUVs do neither, I am perfectly fine with something like this Touareg - it's taking something that's silly and just making it more silly. If someone wants to spend the $$$ for that, who cares?

Alex B

Comments on Volkswagen Touareg R50: Stump pulling in style

The regular Touareg if used for its purposes it actually very good
it is a great off-roader that has a large towing capacity(especially in diesel form) and is a comfortable car with nice interior

darth

Comments on Volkswagen Touareg R50: Stump pulling in style

so maybe it is pointless, and i'm sure there are other ways i would spend what is likely to be a LOT of money; but i certainly wouldn't turn down the chance to drive it... i mean, its a beast of an engine - it's gotta be pretty damn fun

zach

Comments on Volkswagen Touareg R50: Stump pulling in style

Another judgmental treehugger with holier-than-thou attitude. People have reasons for driving SUVs that are no less valid than driving a sedan, sometimes "friggin 5 series" just wouldn't do. As for this Touareg being no faster than V6 Accord, check out X5 4.8 or Cayenne Turbo-they would change your idea about tractors on racetracks.

vitaly76

Comments on Volkswagen Touareg R50: Stump pulling in style

"Even a garden variety V6 Accord is faster than this dinosaur."

dumbest thing i've heard in a long time...

testa di cazzo

Comments on Volkswagen Touareg R50: Stump pulling in style

Actually, V6 Accord is kind of rapid. 6.7 seconds to 60 is a time the Honda is capable of.

http://www.caranddriver.com/previews/13695/first-drive-2008-honda-accord-specs-page5.html

John R

Comments on Volkswagen Touareg R50: Stump pulling in style

i am no tree hugger (i daily a 430hp evolution which get nominal gas mileage), and i agree with hiro. if mid and full size SUVs were used by people that actually need them rather than being display cases for large amounts of mobile electronics and chrome, i think we would see a lot less congestion on the roads. you don't have to be a tree-hugger to see that the most SUVs are carrying only the driver. with the lessened MPG, they are very inefficient even compared to someone who is driving a 7 series.
